UH-OH: Matt Gaetz Could Face Life in Prison
There is a major scandal surrounding Republican Congressman Matt Gaetz that could result in the end of his political career and even possible prison time. The US Department of Justice is investigating whether Gaetz paid for sex with women and underaged girls and whether he engaged in sex trafficking. Dave Aronberg, the State Attorney for Palm Beach County, explained on “Morning Joe” yesterday that the most serious charge Gaetz could face is child sex trafficking, which carries with it a ten-year mandatory minimum sentence and a maximum sentence of life in prison. Gaetz was friends with a Florida tax collector named Joel Greenberg who has been brought up on charges regarding the same girl Gaetz allegedly had a relationship with. It’s possible that Greenberg could flip and provide incriminating evidence against the congressman in exchange for a lighter sentence.
Matt Gaetz has steadfastly denied the allegations, despite not getting much support from fellow Republican lawmakers or even former President Trump. He went on Tucker Carlson’s show last week and insisted that congressional travel records would exonerate him, but those leave out his personal trip logs. Gaetz has also taken the approach of labeling this an extortion attempt and the left’s latest attempt at cancel culture — both having no significant effect. The more that gets revealed about this story, the worse it gets for the Florida congressman. There’s a serious question now as to whether Gaetz will be forced out of the House of Representatives, and even more seriously, sentenced to prison time. It’s far too early to determine whether Gaetz is guilty or not, but it looks like he might be in serious trouble.
Fox News "Comedy" Show Goes Horribly Wrong
Greg Gutfeld launched a comedy show on Fox News yesterday and it failed to be even the least bit funny. This isn’t Fox’s first attempt at comedy, as they’ve tried shows like “The 1/2 Hour News Hour” and “Red Eye” to compete with late night talk shows on other channels. Their new show is simply called “Gutfeld!” and Fox has been heavily promoting it, hoping to compete with the likes of Stephen Colbert, Jimmy Kimmel, and others. It’s complete with guests and a half-interested live studio audience. For the show’s premiere episode, former Trump Press Secretary Kayleigh McEnany and cultural critic and arbiter of ideas Dave Rubin joined as guests. Gutfeld had some material on Joe Biden supposedly having dementia, the Brian Williams Iraq scandal from years ago, and the MLB pulling its All-Star game out of Georgia. It was a rough launch and not very funny, but maybe the Fox audience will give it a watch in the evenings after Tucker, Hannity, and Ingraham.
From yesterday’s show:
Ben Shapiro's Painfully Dumbest Take Ever
Right-wing political commentator Ben Shapiro had one of his dumbest takes in a long time last week. He compared long lines at polling places to long lines at Disneyland. Shapiro argued that long lines for voting are not voter suppression much like long lines at Disneyland are not ride suppression. This analogy comes up short for a number of reasons: for one, the right to vote is constitutionally protected which can’t be said about going to theme parks. Also, there’s an inherent barrier to entry with going to Disneyland since it costs money and it’s run by a private company. By federal law, voting has to be free and it’s a right for most citizens over the age of 18. Also, right-wingers like Shapiro would not accept these arguments about restrictions on constitutional rights when it comes to the Second Amendment, so why are they okay when it comes to the right to vote?
