Kenosha Shooter's Lawyer Makes Him a Hero
In a story that is beyond belief, the lawyer for the Kenosha shooter appeared on Tucker Carlson’s Fox News show this week for a softball interview. Attorney John Pierce defended his client, Kyle Rittenhouse, by saying it “was amazing, what he did.” He argued Rittenhouse’s shooting of three people was justified because it was done purely in self-defense. Funny enough, they are also trying to argue he was a vigilante hero for protecting the streets of Kenosha in the first place. I think a vigilante claiming self-defense is like a bank robber claiming a client at the bank was aggressive during the heist.
On August 12th, Pierce and fellow attorneys Lin Wood and Lawson Pedigo launched the #FightBack Foundation which aims to “stop the lies and smears of the radical left.” Wood said on Twitter that the group is planning to fund Rittenhouse’s defense team. In an interesting twist, Lin Wood appears to be a QAnon follower with a “where we go one we go all” hashtag on her Twitter profile. The fact that the right wing has chosen to circle the wagons around Kyle Rittenhouse is a complete embarrassment.
MSNBC Host SLAMMED: Trump Supporters Acting "Like Muslims"
MSNBC host Joy Reid is being accused of Islamophobia over recent comments she made on her Monday evening broadcast. Reid equated Donald Trump’s radicalization of his followers to how “leaders in the Muslim world talk a lot of violent talk and encourage their supporters to be willing to commit violence.” Congresswoman Ilhan Omar took to Twitter to respond and wrote, “this kinda of casual Islamophobia is hurtful and dangerous. We deserve better and an apology for the painful moment.”
I agree that the words are hurtful and they were poorly chosen. Reid is using language here that suggests radical Trump supporters are like Muslims generally, which is of course not true. However, I believe there is an opportunity here to discuss radicalization in general. Whenever there is a fundamental or cult-like belief in a person or an ideology, radicalization and violence easily follow. People can be moved to become radical for all sorts of reasons. Over the past several years, we’ve seen this happen with some of Donald Trump’s staunchest supporters.
From yesterday’s show:
Trump Commits Felony, Tells People to Vote Twice
In a desperate attempt to hold onto power, Donald Trump is now telling his supporters to vote twice. He wants them to vote by mail and then also go to their polling places on Election Day to cast a vote in-person. Trump’s argument is that if the vote-by-mail system is sound, then they will be turned away at the polls since they’ve already turned in their ballots. The problem for Trump is, trying to vote twice is voter fraud and very much illegal. Moreover, encouraging people to commit voter fraud is a felony in North Carolina. Trump clearly broke the law here on live TV, but like everything else, there will not be consequences.
