Trump Attacks 75-Year-Old Assaulted by Police
Martin Gugino, the 75-year-old protester who was shoved to the ground by two Buffalo police officers, is the subject of another attack. This time it comes from the President of the United States and right-wing media outlets. One America News Network (OAN) has been running a story suggesting that Gugino was using Antifa tactics against the police. Trump took to Twitter to pile on, saying he was trying “to scan police communications in order to black out the equipment.”
Donald Trump is attacking an elderly man who was assaulted by police. In contrast, he has said nothing about the KKK member who drove into a crowd of protesters a few days ago in Virginia. Not only is this a reflection of Trump’s sympathy deficit and conspiratorial tendencies, it also shows his complete disconnect with where public sentiment is right now. Trump will continue to divide the country because that’s all he knows how to do. It’s up to us to defeat him in November.
Hannity Recommends Tear Gas Gun in Live TV
Fox News host Sean Hannity promoted a pepper spray and tear gas gun on his live nightly television program. The gun is made by the company Byrna and is promoted as a non-lethal alternative to traditional firearms. The segment basically came across as an infomercial for the company. Absent from the report was that these “non-lethal” alternatives can still lead to permanent eye damage, respiratory issues, and increased risk of contracting diseases like COVID-19.
The deeper issue here is that people like Sean Hannity approach these issues by thinking about what weapon or aggressive tactic can we use to solve them. One of the ways police encounters can go wrong is by the unnecessary escalation of aggression. Serious police reform will require implementing more de-escalation tactics. So often potentially dangerous encounters can be calmed through transparent communication and negotiation. We’ll see if folks like Sean Hannity will eventually be willing to come around to that viewpoint.
Bunker Boy Caught Lying, Trump Wasn't "Inspecting" His Bunker
Donald Trump has been saying he went to the White House bunker recently not for his protection, but rather to inspect it. While most of Trump’s team has been on the same page with this lie, Attorney General William Barr contradicted Trump’s narrative in a Fox News interview. Barr said, “the Secret Service recommended that the President go down to the bunker.” If they’re lying about this, what else are they lying about?
