BREAKING: House to Vote on Making DC the 51st State
The House of Representatives will be voting later this month on whether to make Washington DC the 51st state of the United States. House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer wrote in a letter to colleagues that at some point in April the House will take this proposal to the floor. While the bill almost certainly will pass the lower chamber, it will struggle to make its way through the Senate. DC statehood would need sixty votes to pass the Senate and it’s not something Democrats could do via budget reconciliation. Republicans who have spoken out on the issue so far have largely expressed disapproval, knowing that DC statehood would result in two more Democratic senators and a Democratic voting-representative in the House.
Washington DC is absolutely deserving of becoming the 51s state. The District of Columbia has a bigger population than Vermont and Wyoming. Its residents pay federal income tax and yet they do not have a member of Congress who can actually vote on legislation. They do have a delegate in the House, Eleanor Holmes Norton, but since she can’t vote, there is quite literally a system of taxation without representation. Democrats may look next to statehood for Puerto Rico, but that effort will run into the exact same challenges. Many of these agenda items on the Democratic wish list won’t even get a vote in the Senate if centrists in the party can’t agree to abolish or weaken the filibuster.
New Scandal: Kamala Harris Laughs Wrong, and Too Much
Newsmax has a new pseudo-scandal and this time it has to do with the way Kamala Harris laughs. The Biden administration thus far hasn’t had any major scandals so right-wing media is left having to manufacture its own. This week, Newsmax host Grant Stinchfield ran a segment on the way the vice president laughs and drew parallels to the Wicked Witch of the West from the Wizard of Oz. Stinchfield said he thought an awful lot about Kamala’s “cackling.” He also took issue with when she laughed and how often she laughed. The segment was complete with a montage of vice presidential giggles. One can’t help but wonder if Newsmax would run a segment making fun of a male politician’s laugh or if they would even think to. It really goes to show that they are out of ammo on the right and that they are still searching for criticism that will stick.
From yesterday’s show:
SHOCK: Republican Voters COLLAPSE, Lowest in a Decade
Opinion of the American right wing has collapsed to its lowest level in nearly a decade. According to Gallup, Americans who identify as Republican or Republican-leaning independents make up just 40% of the population. In contrast, 49% identify as Democrats or Democratic-leaning independents. The nine-point gap is the biggest advantage for the Democrats since the fourth quarter of 2012, when Barack Obama was reelected president. There are specific reasons why Republicans find themselves in this situation: For one, Biden’s victory over Trump and the way the right conducted itself after losing, climaxing in the Capitol insurrection, turned people away from the Republican Party. The new administration’s handling of coronavirus, both with the American Rescue Plan and with vaccination logistics, is also contributing to these relatively high approval marks for Democrats and troubling signs for Republicans.
