Republicans Hilariously Implode in Conspiracy Hearings
With all that is going on right now — a pandemic, an economic depression, and a President trying to sabotage a federal election — Republicans on Capitol Hill are holding bogus partisan congressional hearings. Former Acting Attorney General Sally Yates spoke before a Senate committee yesterday to discuss the Obama administration’s investigation into contacts between the Russian government and the Trump campaign. Ted Cruz, Lindsey Graham, and others tried to trick Yates into saying Obama was spying on Trump for political reasons, but it didn’t go their way. Yates correctly pointed out that Carter Page was a former Trump adviser when the probe began and that the FISA warrant was not on the Trump campaign. That really threw the Republican Senators into a tailspin.
The sad thing is that in Republican circles, these same videos will be viewed and they’ll think it’s Sally Yates who looks bad in these exchanges. In reality, Lindsay Graham looks incoherent and Ted Cruz’s traps and semantic games fail. This is often how Republicans argue. They use a lot of word games and optics because they can’t win on the ideas, but their followers love it and think they’re winning. They enjoy clips like these as they do clips of Kayleigh McEnany storming off stage with a scripted line at the end of her press briefings. Many of us accurately see them for what they are, which are just completely empty, vapid, meaningless optics. But there are Republicans out there who love it.
Kids Positive for Coronavirus After ONE DAY in School
The experiment of sending kids back to school during a raging hundred-year pandemic by this administration has failed and it has failed miserably. I’m not pleased to say this. I want kids to go back to school and I understand the economic implications of keeping them home. But first and foremost, we need to consider whether this is a good idea from a public health standpoint. Right now, it just isn’t. We've already debunked the false notion that kids can't catch the disease or are “immune” from coronavirus. They can also pass the disease onto family members and teachers, who could be elderly or immunosuppressed.
Israel was handling the coronavirus well months ago, but when kids went back to school, the situation reversed. The United States does not have the virus under control and it is expected to get worse as we enter the fall months. Is it really all that crazy to say we shouldn’t have in-person classes through the end of the year so we can mitigate this dangerous second wave? Of course, for Trump and Republicans, this isn’t about public health, but rather about optics. They want to make it seem like the country is going back to normal, even when it shouldn’t be.
From yesterday’s show:
SHOCK: The Case for Trump's Re-Election
It is not a guaranteed thing that Donald Trump is going to lose the 2020 election. The leads that Joe Biden had a few weeks ago, of 10-15% points nationally, have diminished. Now, Biden is leading by around 5-7%. With about three months remaining in the race, those leads could dwindle even further. Also, as we saw in 2016, Donald Trump can win the election without winning the popular vote. We need to take this seriously.
