Trump BLOWS GASKET, Attacks REPUBLICANS Over Infrastructure Bill
Joe Biden needs to get another legislative victory on the board in 2021 if he’s going to be able to go to the voters in the 2022 midterms and make the case for people to reelect Democrats so they can keep control of Congress. The topic that Biden could score a win on is infrastructure, which he and Democrats believe they can get done with or without Republican help through the process of budget reconciliation in the Senate. There are some signs showing that the GOP may actually work with Democrats to get the project done, as the Senate recently voted 67 to 32 to allow debate on the infrastructure package that has been in the works all year long. The current iteration of the bill would come with a price tag of $1.2 trillion to be used on projects like public transportation, repairing bridges, and installing broadband internet.
One person who was not pleased with the vote in the Senate is former President Trump, who was angry enough to release one of his “official statements” over it. Trump wrote, “under the weak leadership of Mitch McConnell, Senate Republicans continue to lose. He lost Arizona, he lost Georgia, he ignored Election Fraud and he doesn’t fight. Now he’s giving Democrats everything they want and getting nothing in return. No deal is better than a bad deal. Fight for America, not for special interests and Radical Democrats. RINOs are ruining America, right alongside Communist Democrats.” It is Donald Trump who lost everything for Republicans but he’s still determined to rewrite history and shift the blame to congressional Republicans for his defeat. The fact that he sees this infrastructure debate moving forward as merely about negotiation is just one more indicator that he never actually cared about the country. Politics for Trump was all about strengthening his own ego ad fortune and it was never about actually helping people across the country.
COVID Spreading 100% Faster in Republican Counties
We’ve long expected that COVID-19 would ultimately become a Republican pandemic in the United States. The idea was that, since Democrats are getting vaccinated in high numbers while Republicans are in low numbers, and because we know the vaccines to be highly safe and effective, the long-term effect would be that far more right wingers die of the disease than left wingers. It has now been a few months since everyone in the United States became eligible to get the shots and now that cases are resurging for the autumn wave, we’re starting to see that bifurcation. According to a report from the Washington Post, the COVID infection rate in the last two weeks is twice as high in red counties as it is in blue counties. In the last two weeks, on average, blue counties are seeing 10.2 new cases for every 100,000 residents, while red counties are seeing 19.5 new cases per 100,000 residents.
This is an incredible gap and it makes it even more remarkable when you consider that blue counties tend to be more densely populated where there is more interaction among people. But the fact of the matter is, few people who are unvaccinated in these red counties will see this data and become convinced that they need to get vaccinated themselves. Instead, they’ll say the data is wrong, or that COVID isn’t a big deal, or that the vaccines are more dangerous than the disease. Or, they'll come up with something out of whole cloth, like Biden is bringing infected immigrants across the border and releasing them into red states to drive up the numbers. With vaccines now readily available, preventing the contraction of and death from COVID is much more within people’s control and yet still there are many folks who won’t take the most basic steps to take advantage of that.
From over the weekend:
Trump Was "Almost Giddy" During Jan 6 Riots
Washington Post reporter Carol Leonnig confirmed what many of us already suspected about Donald Trump on the day of the January 6th Capitol riots, which is that the former president was “almost giddy” about them. Leonnig went on CNN’s “New Day” to promote her book I Alone Can Fix It: Donald J. Trump's Catastrophic Final Year. One of the CNN co-hosts asked Leonnig what the feeling inside the Trump White House was as the events of January 6th were unfolding. She responded by saying, “he is in his dining room, off the Oval Office, watching it and almost giddy. Because I mean — he does watch a lot of TV — but here he is seeing thousands of his supporters basically trample up to the steps, break through barricades, all rallying for him to try to stop the certification of the election for Joe Biden.” Leonnig went on to explain that Trump’s tone only started to change once he realized the rioters might be perceived as low class and unruly and that at an optic level this could be bad for him.
