BREAKING: Trump Grand Jury Convened to Decide on Indictment
Yesterday, we learned that the Manhattan District Attorney has convened a grand jury to decide whether to indict former President Donald Trump. This means that the prosecutor, Cyrus Vance, believes that he has evidence of a possible crime. Whether the crime was committed by Trump himself, or someone close to Trump, or by his company, or all of the above, we just don’t know yet. The Washington Post reports that "The panel was convened recently and will sit three days a week for six months." Vance’s office has been investigating Trump’s pre-presidency business dealings for more than two years now. This investigation relates to acts Trump and his company allegedly did before the Trump presidency, not during. Matters currently being looked into include tax fraud, insurance fraud, and falsification of business records. White collar crimes often take a long time to look into because they are complicated, but it looks like the process is finally moving along.
Former federal prosecutor Renato Mariotti had an excellent Twitter thread about the meaning of all of this. Mariotti, speaking from his experience, said that “the mere fact that a special grand jury was empaneled does not mean that any particular person will be charged. It does not necessarily mean that Trump himself will be charged. But it is fair to say that Vance's investigation is far along and that charges are on the horizon.” Mariotti also pointed out that fraud charges would have to come down to state of mind to be proven and that “a slip-up is not fraud." It remains unclear whether the former president will be charged with anything related to this investigation, the one in New York State, or any future inquiries. Forming the grand jury does suggest, however, that Trump may actually finally face some consequences for his alleged wrongdoing.
VIDEO: Marjorie Taylor Greene Would Fight Removal of Hitler Statues
Republican Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene keeps making news for all of the wrong reasons. This time, it is because of a video resurfaced by Punchbowl News's Jake Sherman that shows Greene speaking before a committee in her home district. The future congresswoman said in the video from June of 2020 that she would be opposed to taking down Hitler statues, if such statues existed. Greene told the committee: “whether I see a statue that may be something that I would fully disagree with like Adolf Hitler, maybe a statue of Satan himself, I would not want to say take it down. But again, it’s so I could tell my children and teach others about who these people are, what they did, and what they may be about.” These statements don’t come across as all that shocking from Marjorie Taylor Greene. She seems to have some obsession with this period of German history, recently comparing a mask requirement on the House floor to Jews being forced to wear yellow stars.
The other strange aspect to this clip is the argument about how statues are needed to teach people about history. There are plenty of ways to learn about historical figures, including books, documentaries, and the internet. Why do kids or anyone else need to visit a statue of someone to learn about them? It's almost like the right doesn't realize that documentaries, history books, and teachers exist. This argument also ignores the fact that most often the point of making a statue of someone is so they can be honored or revered. If a society progresses to a point where it doesn’t want to honor or revere a historical figure anymore, it makes perfect sense for that society to take down the statue and replace it with something else. But Greene would be opposed to that, because apparently it would render her unable to teach others about history.
From yesterday’s show:
Fox Host Visibly Confused by Obviously False COVID Numbers
Fox & Friends host Steve Doocy managed to look really foolish on air talking about COVID-19 case and death totals. The Fox host said last week that in the US, 52,000 people have died from coronavirus and that 2 million have been affected by COVID. The actual numbers in the United States are more like 600,000 confirmed deaths and 33 million confirmed cases. What appears to have happened is that Doocy was reading the statistics for the state of New York, which are much more in line with the figures that he gave. But watching Doocy panic as he realizes something doesn’t make sense while looking off screen at staff was really a sight to behold. Later on in the show, Fox & Friends corrected the blunder during a groundbreaking segment about Chris Rock and so-called “cancel culture.”
