Republican Support for Convicting Trump GROWS in the Senate
The shadow of Donald Trump looms over the early days of the Joe Biden presidency as the Senate weighs whether to convict the 45th president. A new Politico/Morning Consult poll released Tuesday found that 20% of Republican voters approve of convicting Trump on the charge of inciting insurrection. That number is up from 14% two weeks ago in the immediate aftermath of the Trump riots. Additionally, 86% of Democrats support conviction. Trump was impeached by the House of Representatives in his final days in office and the next step is a Senate trial. If 67 out of 100 senators vote to convict Trump, there will be a follow-up vote that with a simple majority, would ban Trump from holding federal office ever again.
The major question is whether seventeen Republican senators will break ranks and vote to convict. Several GOP senators have already expressed their plans to vote for conviction but there has not been a huge groundswell of support for turning on the former president. Some are questioning whether the trial should happen at all, since Trump is no longer president and removal from office is no longer on the table. This would send a bad signal that getting impeached can come with zero consequences and would further turn the process into a political football. The Senate should hold the trial and there remains a slim chance that it will end in a conviction for Donald Trump.
Former Fox Host Shep Smith UNLEASHES On Fox News
Shepard Smith had a fascinating interview with Christiane Amanpour of CNN about the direction Fox News has gone in over the past four years. Smith is a former Fox host who would occasionally speak out against Trump and Republicans when they went beyond the pale. Eventually, Shepard Smith chose to leave Fox and he now works for CNBC. In the interview with Amanpour, Smith explained his decision to stay at Fox for so long. He said he felt an obligation to stay out of concern they might replace his hour of programing with yet another right-wing opinion show. Smith also extrapolated on Fox News’s role in pushing “the big lie” that voter fraud in the 2020 election swung the results. The interview was a much-needed peek behind the curtain at Fox News and we’ll see how the network changes during the Biden years.
