Fox News IMPLODES on Cancun Cruz Fiasco
Fox News used every excuse it could come up with to defend Texas Senator Ted Cruz’s boneheaded decision to fly down to Cancun while the people of his state were suffering from snowstorms and power outages. Anchors on Fox tried arguing there wasn’t anything for Cruz to do, even though he could have phone banked, fundraised, or leveraged his connections to get relief to people. Sean Hannity argued that Cruz was just trying to be a good father by bringing his kids to warm weather, even though the family obviously didn’t need to go on vacation at that exact time. Hannity said, “I think you can be a father and be the senator of Texas all at the same time and make a round trip, quick, drop off trip [to Cancun], and come home.” This ignores the fact that Cruz intended on staying in Mexico through the weekend and only booked the early return flight after he got caught.
Another tactic of the right on this Ted Cruz scandal is to use whataboutism. They will compare it to New York Governor Andrew Cuomo’s nursing home scandal and ask why the media are focused so heavily on one and not the other. Of course, both politicians deserve scrutiny over their mistakes, but Cuomo’s wrongdoing in New York does not excuse or have anything to do with Cruz’s flub in Texas. Fox extended its criticisms to Hillary Clinton and New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio, trying to resuscitate scandals of old to distract from the Texas Senator abandoning his own state in its time of need.
AOC Spends Weekend Doing Ted Cruz's Job for Him
With Texas Senator Ted Cruz fleeing to Cancun to avoid the winter weather and power outages ravaging his state, people like Alexandria Ocasio Cortez and Beto O’Rourke have been left to fill in the void. These Democratic politicians were able to leverage their power and influence to get people fed and warm while ERCOT tries to get the power back on. (Keep in mind that AOC is a congresswoman from New York, not Texas, and Beto O’Rourke currently does not even hold public office.) Ocasio Cortez led a fundraising campaign over the weekend to help the victims in Texas, an effort that has so far generated over $4 million. O’Rourke spent the week phone banking and reaching out to elderly folks across the state who were in need of assistance.
When Ted Cruz was caught last week fleeing to Cancun, many conservatives argued that as a US senator, there really wasn’t much Cruz could do in Texas. They said the power outage was an issue for the state government and with the US Senate not in session, Cruz sticking around would have been pointless. The efforts of AOC and Beto O’Rourke this week have completely debunked that argument. Cruz has the connections at the state level to help people out during a crisis. He also has a national following that would have allowed him to launch a fundraising effort similar to AOC’s. Instead, Cruz decided to forgo one of his most important job responsibilities — constituent services, at a time when his state was undergoing maybe its largest catastrophe in decades.
From over the weekend:
Nikki Haley ABANDONS Trump: "We Shouldn't Have Followed Him"
The divide in the Republican Party continues to grow between the traditional conservatives and the Trump fanatics. Former UN Ambassador Nikki Haley, who served under Trump, has now planted her flag squarely in the anti-Trump wing of the party. In an interview with Politico, Haley said, “[Trump’s] not going to run for federal office again.” She went on to say, “we need to acknowledge he let us down. He went down a path he shouldn’t have, and we shouldn’t have followed him, and we shouldn’t have listened to him. And we can’t let that ever happen again.” Even this milquetoast critique is enough to put Haley on the former president’s enemies list. However, she likely has calculated that this stance could make her a frontrunner in the 2024 Republican primaries if the party decides to move away from Trump over the next few years.
