OH NO: Giuliani Called Arizona to "Fix Up" Election Results
The future keeps looking bleaker and bleaker for Trump ally and former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani. There is a new report from an Arizona publication that Giuliani called an election official about getting the state’s election challenge “fixed up” so that Trump could win the state despite getting fewer votes than Joe Biden. The Arizona Republic revealed on Sunday that Rudy called Maricopa County Supervisor Bill Gates (not the Microsoft guy) on December 24, 2020 to introduce himself as Trump’s lawyer. It’s reported that he left the following voicemail: “Bill, it’s Rudy Giuliani, President Trump’s lawyer. If you get a chance, would you please give me a call? I have a few things I’d like to talk over with you. Maybe we can get this thing fixed up. You know, I really think it’s a shame that Republicans sort of are both in this, kind of, situation. And I think there may be a nice way to resolve this for everybody.”
What’s remarkable about Giuliani’s message was just how brazen he was about wanting to shore up the election for Trump. Rudy is asking for a favor like a mobster would, but not in the way that a mobster would. He barely even used any coded language and was dumb enough to deliver his coercive message via voicemail. Gates has since said he never returned Rudy's call and that “we don’t do what is easy, we do what is right.” Perhaps there’s some chance of Giuliani facing legal consequences for doing this but it’s unlikely at this point. Federal investigators appear to be a lot more interested in his alleged work in Ukraine, which has led to a recent search and seizure at the former mayor’s home and office in New York City. Now, Rudy finds himself possibly getting into more trouble and the 45th president is not around in any substantive way to help him.
I've Been Censoring Myself to Avoid Toxic Backlash
David explains that he has been self-censoring to some degree over the past couple of weeks, choosing not to cover certain stories that would create backlash from some in the audience and unjustified hatred from folks online. Specifically, this has to do with the wave of antisemitic attacks over the past couple of weeks inspired by the recent flare up in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. All across the United States, there have been instances of Jewish people being targeted and attacked. Some perpetrators boneheadedly view these attacks as a way to get back as the Israeli government. Others are using the rise in tensions as a basis to act on preconceived beliefs about Jewish people. As David explained on Twitter, “If I'm completely honest, I hesitate to do a segment covering the antisemitic attacks and beatings of the last week because I don't have the stomach for the deluge of antisemitism that such a segment would trigger against me.” The Anti-Defamation League has identified 193 reports of anti-Jewish incidents in the last week and 135 the week before. Ultimately, we decided to cover these stories, but our initial hesitation goes to show that there’s a lot of work left to be done to stop antisemitism in the US and abroad.
From yesterday’s show:
MyPillow CEO Says He Got & Hid Voting Machines Across Country
MyPillow guy Mike Lindell is still obsessing over voting machines, six months after the US presidential election. Lindell claims to be collecting Dominion and Smartmatic voting machines and is hiding the machines in secret locations around the country. Private flight records show that Lindell is making quick trips like one between New Bedford, Massachusetts and Horseheads, New York and then back again. It’s unclear so far what Lindell expects to prove or gain from doing this. The effort sounds much like a reverse scavenger hunt around the United States. Dominion Voting Systems is currently in the process of suing the MyPillow guy for $1.3 billion over defamation claims. Lindell is countersuing Dominion for $1.6 billion for alleged “suppression of speech and attacks on the company [MyPillow].” It’s hard to imagine a story like this getting any wackier, but this is the state of the Trump-supporting right in 2021. We’ll have to stay tuned to see if Lindell keeps doing this and whether it actually accomplishes anything.
