Nina Turner Defeated by Establishment in Ohio Dem Primary
Nina Turner lost her bid yesterday to become the Democratic nominee for US Representative from the 11th district of Ohio. Shontel Brown, a member of the Cuyahoga County Council, won the race receiving over 37,000 votes making up 50.2% of the electorate. Nina Turner, who served as co-chair of Bernie Sanders’ 2020 presidential campaign, came in second place in the primary with over 33,000 votes (44.5%). On the Republican side, Laverne Gore won but only with about 4,000 votes, suggesting the general election will be a landslide win for Brown. Brown’s win is partially credited to how she was able to win the support of establishment Democrats like Hillary Clinton and Jim Clyburn. Turner conceded to Brown shortly after the Associated Press called the race and said during her speech “tonight my friends, we have looked across the promised land, but for this campaign, on this night, we will not cross the river.”
It’s difficult for some of us to assess right now why Turner wasn’t able to win the race. She went into the campaign with name recognition and had an effective advertising pitch. The simple explanation would be that Cleveland, Ohio is not the most progressive area and that many of these Ohio Democrats are content with Joe Biden’s style of politics and how the first seven months of his administration have gone. This is a district that is mostly black, mostly working class without college degrees, and that has a median household income of $42,000 (that's $26,000 under the national median). Certainly the people of the 11th district would benefit from policies Turner supports, like Medicare for All and raising the minimum wage. Unfortunately, she wasn’t able to deliver a win in this race, but that doesn’t mean progressives can’t be effective in other parts of the country especially as Bernie Sanders-type policies become more mainstream.
BREAKING: NYC Mandating Vaccine for Restaurants & Gyms
New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio announced a first-of-its-kind vaccine mandate to participate in many indoor activities across the city. The order will go into effect on August 16th and enforcement of the policy will start on September 13th. The places that will be required to check proof of vaccination from customers include bars and indoor dining, gyms and fitness centers, and entertainment centers like movie theaters and Broadway shows. New York has also mandated that all of the city’s employees need to show proof of vaccination or submit weekly negative coronavirus tests in order to keep their jobs. New hires will be required to be vaccinated without the weekly testing exception. Residents and workers of New York City are now being offered $100 to get their shots if they haven’t already done so. This push is being done in conjunction with a rise in coronavirus cases across the US and with the highly contagious Delta variant becoming the dominant strain in the country.
New York will probably be joined by a number of cities and blue areas that decide to initiate some sort of vaccine passport system. There are issues with the program, like coming up with a way for restaurants and entertainment centers to verify who has been vaccinated and how to detect forgeries. The people who threw out their vaccine cards will have to come up with some other way to prove their vaccination status. Certainly there will be issues with the verification system, and some unvaccinated people will get through. However, we’re seeing that the honor system for masking for vaccinated versus unvaccinated people in indoor places is not working and extra due diligence will become necessary as cases continue to spike.
From yesterday’s show:
Lindsey Graham Tests Positive for COVID-19
South Carolina Senator Lindsey Graham has announced that he has tested positive for COVID-19 despite getting vaccinated earlier this year. Graham said that his symptoms are mild and suspects that if he hadn’t gotten vaccinated his symptoms would be “far worse.” It appears as though the senator may have exposed his colleagues to the virus as well, as he was with several other lawmakers on a boat ride last weekend. Senators Joe Manchin, Mark Kelly, Chris Coons, John Thune, Jacky Rosen, Maria Cantwell, and Catherine Cortez Masto were all exposed to Graham on Saturday and are following CDC guidelines to prevent the virus from spreading even further. These breakthrough cases are rare, but they can happen since no vaccine is 100% effective. The unfortunate thing is, that vaccine skeptical people will hear about a story like this and come away thinking that there’s no point in getting the shots because either way you can still get COVID. The important takeaway is that Graham’s chances of hospitalization and death are significantly diminished because he made the right choice to get himself vaccinated.
