Insiders: Trump "Fragile," May Drop Out
A Republican Party operative told Fox News that Donald Trump is in an extremely fragile state and that he may drop out of the 2020 presidential race. Fox Business reporter Charlie Gasparino posted on Twitter that “Republican operatives are for the first time raising the possibility that Trump could drop out of the race if his poll numbers don't rebound over the weekend.” The President has been trailing significantly in the polls recently, behind Joe Biden by as many as 14 percentage points.
Now here's what I think: I don't think it's going to happen. I don't believe Donald Trump is dropping out. There are plenty of Republicans who think a landslide Trump loss would set up the left for a decade of victories. The issue is that they would have to convince Trump to leave the race willingly, and that doesn’t seem achievable. It is conceivable that Trump would exit the race if he was convinced he had no shot at winning, but short of that, he’ll stay in. This might just be wishful thinking on the part of these Republican operatives.
Trump Officials Believe He Is "Delusional," a Security Threat
There is an absolutely stunning new report from a longtime investigative journalist, Carl Bernstein, about what is going on behind the scenes with Donald Trump. One account is that Trump is completely “delusional” on the basis of a bunch of different phone calls he's had with world leaders. The second account is that Trump's phone calls with world leaders actually represent a security threat. Multiple sources described Trump as bullying and belittling allies while fawning over autocratic leaders. Trump's behavior was said to be so unusual and erratic that it convinced senior administration officials that the President was “delusional.”
While it is important to stress that these are only allegations, they certainly fit with who we know Trump to be. If George W. Bush was said to be bonding with dictators and bragging to them about his business experience, I don’t think I would believe it. Bush was a horrible president, but that’s not who he was. Trump is that kind of president, and that’s why Bernstein’s reporting rings true to me.

Coronavirus cases have been spiking in recent days, with the United States getting around 40,000 new additional cases per day. The new daily case totals now are surpassing the prior records of mid-April. The states that are hardest-hit at the moment include Texas, Florida, California, and Arizona. The prediction that the virus would subside in the summer has not turned out to be true in the United States.
