Republicans CANCEL Liz Cheney for Admitting Trump Lost
Republicans have been laser-focused on cancel culture over the past few months, because they’d rather talk about about Dr. Seuss and Mr. Potato Head than work with the Biden administration. But now the Republican Party is moving to cancel one of its own — Congresswoman Liz Cheney. Today, the at-large US representative from Wyoming was booted from her leadership position as Chair of the House Republican Conference. Cheney has been an outspoken critic of Donald Trump’s reaction to his election defeat and the subsequent January 6th Capitol riots. She long ago accepted that Joe Biden won the 2020 election fair and square and even voted for Trump’s impeachment for inciting insurrection. Cheney will likely be replaced by up-and-comer Elise Stefanik, who recently hitched her wagon to Trump. Cheney may also be at risk of losing her congressional seat to a Trumpist challenger in 2022.
Republicans claim they don’t cancel people for dissenting views and that their party is a big tent. Yet, here we have an example of someone simply accepting reality and having the slightest bit of integrity and Republicans rushed to end her career. Cheney said on the House floor yesterday that she stands for conservatives principles and that means adhering to the Constitution and the rule of law. But the Republican Party isn’t about conservative principles and the rule of law anymore — they’re about being subservient to Donald Trump. The question now is whether Republican voters will see Cheney’s ousting as “cancel culture” or if they’ll explain it away as something else. The right is always willing to accept hypocrisy and Trump is often the one forcing them to.
Dr Fauci CRUSHES Rand Paul Conspiracy Confrontation
A Senate hearing took place yesterday on Capitol Hill with public health officials testifying like the new CDC Director Rochelle Walensky and the NIH’s Dr. Anthony Fauci. Kentucky Senator Rand Paul saw this as an opportunity to make headlines and confront Fauci once again. In the past, these exchanges have not gone well for Rand Paul and his conspiratorial nonsense, but he keeps trying to get the best of the nation’s top infectious disease expert. Recently, many Republicans like Rand Paul have been fixated on the coronavirus lab leak theory. More cynical folks believe that the virus may have originated from a Wuhan lab and was released deliberately as a bioweapon. Fauci is, of course, not on board with these theories and argues that the current medical science suggests that COVID-19 originated from an animal and jumped to a human.
Rand Paul, during the exchange, did his best to link Dr. Fauci and the NIH to the Wuhan lab in question and suggested he funded gain-of-function research. Gain-of-function research is research into making microorganisms or viruses have increased transmissibility, virulence, or immunogenicity. Fauci ensured Paul that they did not fund that type of research, but that did not convince the indignant Kentucky senator. Paul sounded as though he wasn’t listening to what Fauci was saying or simply didn’t care what he had to say. Perhaps dazed over the confrontation not going as well as he had hoped, Paul continued reading his prepared lines as Fauci continually beat him back on the gain-of-function research allegation. Rand Paul has a role to play and that’s appealing to his conspiratorial base of supporters. Unfortunately for him, this attempt at grandstanding didn’t go so well.
From yesterday’s show:
SHOCK: Biden Hits 63% Approval in New Poll
According to the American public, Joe Biden has been doing a stellar job so far as president. A new poll from the Associated Press-NORC found that 63% of Americans approve of the new president’s job performance. That includes 96% of Democrats, 62% of independents, and even 23% of Republicans. Biden’s job approval is bolstered by Americans’ perceptions on his handling of the pandemic, with 71% approving on the topic. Fifty-seven percent of Americans support Biden on the economy and 62% support his work so far on health care. The president continues to benefit off passing the $1.9 trillion American Rescue Plan, which has high approval even among Republican voters. Biden also benefits from being a rational, calm, empathetic, and thoughtful leader, which cannot be said about his predecessor.
