Embarrassing Republicans Off Rails at Disastrous Riot Hearings
Yesterday, the House of Representatives passed legislation to form a commission tasked with investigating what exactly took place before and during the January 6th Capitol riots. The bill passed the lower chamber overall 252-175. Democrats were unanimous in their support and were joined by 35 Republican representatives. An astounding 175 Republicans voted against the bill. Virtually all of these lawmakers could have been victims of the Trump rioters that day and yet the vast majority of GOP members don’t want it to be investigated. Many likely calculate that the January 6th commission would make Trump look bad, which would make them look bad by extension. Also, an investigation could reveal if any members were complicit in the events and some could be forced to comply with subpoenas.
Many Republicans took turns on the floor of the House yesterday expressing why they would be voting against establishing this commission. Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene said "the media is going to use this to smear Trump supporters.” In Greene’s case, she probably just wants to protect herself because a close ally of hers stormed the Capitol that day. Congressman Madison Cawthorn spoke about how his constituents don’t care about this commission and that the “Biden border crisis” is the top issue for people in his North Carolina district. Rep. Louie Gohmert compared a January 6th commission to the September 11th commission and rambled about how things are different now because “the partisanship has been dramatic and that’s why it’s different now than the 9/11 commission.” In truth, it’s different now because foreign terrorists were responsible for the September 11th attacks, whereas Trump and thousands of his craziest supporters were responsible for the January 6th riots. It’s a real question now as to whether ten Republican senators will break with their party and make this commission a reality.
Trump LOSES IT Over Being Under Criminal Investigation
Donald Trump is losing his mind over his organization being under criminal investigation in the state of New York. New York State Attorney General Letitia James confirmed the other day that they are conducting not only a civil, but a criminal investigation into Trump’s company. This is a separate inquiry from the one being conducted by Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance Jr. It was predictable that Trump would write these investigations off as “witch hunts” and indeed, that’s exactly what he’s going with. The former president can no longer take to Twitter to express his outrage, since he his banned from virtually every social media site. That meant he had to resort to using his blog, “The Desk of Donald J. Trump,” to offer his thoughts on the matter.
Trump’s blog post about the newest criminal investigation was so long, it would have made for a Twitter thread that was dozens of tweets long. This is yet another sign the former president is melting down and suspects prosecutors could finally be closing in on him and his company. The insurrectionist-in-chief wrote in his blog post that, “this is something that happens in failed third world countries, not the United States. If you can run for a prosecutor’s office pledging to take out your enemies, and be elected to that job by partisan voters who wish to enact political retribution, then we are no longer a free constitutional democracy.” Trump went on to criticize his former lawyer Michael Cohen, writing the investigation was “based on a lying, discredited low life, who was not listened to or given credibility by other prosecutorial offices, and sentenced to 3 years in prison for lying and other events unrelated to me.” Cohen may end up being the one to credit for Trump finally facing consequences for his actions.
From yesterday’s show:
Eric Trump and Rudy Giuliani's Son Compete for Dumbest Interview
Eric Trump and Andrew Giuliani appeared to be competing this week over who could deliver the dumbest talking points to right-wing media outlets. Eric Trump is Donald Trump’s son and Andrew Giuliani is the son of the beleaguered Rudy Giuliani. First up, Eric Trump went on Sean Hannity’s program to complain about the Biden administration. Within the span of seconds, Eric managed to contradict himself by saying the Biden White House has “no one there, they don’t travel, they don’t go down to the border, they don’t go overseas.” If there’s no one at the White House, as Eric says, that suggests they are travelling, but they’re also not doing that according to Eric Trump. Then came in Andrew Giuliani, who recently launched his campaign for Governor of New York. He told Hannity that “anything that is going to bring in revenue to New York, I am pro that.” These interviews go to show that there’s currently no serious farm team for the Republican Party.
