Mitch McConnell SUPPORTS Trump Impeachment to Save HIMSELF
Donald Trump is going to be impeached for a second time by the US House of Representatives, this time for the charge of “incitement of insurrection” following last week’s attack on the Capitol. Anywhere from five to twenty House Republicans are expected to join Democrats in supporting impeachment. Trump will become the first president to be impeached by the House two separate times and half of the impeachments in presidential history will soon belong to Trump. Nancy Pelosi moved to impeach after Trump refused to resign his office and Mike Pence refused to invoke the 25th Amendment.
Next the impeachment resolution goes to the US Senate, where a two-thirds majority (67 out of 100 Senators), is needed to convict the president. That vote will take place after Biden is sworn in, but it will still be an important vote. If the Senate does convict, there will be a follow-up vote to determine whether or not Trump will be banned from ever again holding public office. In a sign that there’s a chance enough Republicans will join in on the effort, Majority Leader (soon Minority Leader) Mitch McConnell has expressed that he is considering voting in favor of Trump’s conviction. McConnell reportedly believes it might be the best way to purge Trump from the Republican Party.
WOW: Multiple Republicans Will Impeach Trump
As the second impeachment of Donald Trump moves onto the next stage, there is an open question as to whether there will be enough votes in the Senate to convict him. It is likely that Democrats will be unanimous in voting for Trump’s removal, which will get them to fifty votes. They will then need seventeen out of fifty Republican votes in order to get the job done. Several Republican senators have already expressed interest in voting for conviction, including Majority Leader Mitch McConnell.
Other Republican senators who have stated conviction could be appropriate include Lisa Murkowski of Alaska. She said last week “I want him out” and that “if the Republican Party has become nothing more than the party of Trump, I sincerely question whether this is the party for me.” In addition, Pat Toomey of Pennsylvania has encouraged Trump to resign and says he could face “criminal liability” for the insurrection. Mitt Romney of Utah is another possible “yes” vote, as he voted for Trump’s conviction last year. Susan Collins of Maine is an open question at this point. While it’s unlikely to see seventeen Republican senators turn on Trump, there is a slight possibility because of McConnell’s influence on the party.
From yesterday’s show:
Yep, Trumpists Planning Even MORE VIOLENT Riot
Some extremist Trump supporters are planning more violent attacks leading up to Joe Biden’s inauguration on January 20th. The FBI is investigating threats to the US Capitol and state capitals across the country between January 17th and Inauguration Day. Police presence has rapidly increased in the district to protect the Constitution and the transfer of power. Donald Trump, who incited the insurrection on January 6th, is doing very little to call out his own supporters and ensure that they won’t launch another attack. Some Republicans are arguing that this threat of violence is a reason to oppose removing Trump via impeachment or the 25th Amendment. Americans need to act boldly to stand up to Trump and his ilk at this very dangerous period.
