Trump Crumbles In Worst Interview in History
Donald Trump was interviewed by Jonathan Swan of Axios and it was one of Trump’s wackiest exchanges yet. At nearly every turn, Trump was fact-checked by Swan and he could not back up his arguments under scrutiny. When Trump would say “they said,” Swan would retort, “who said?” When Trump would reference “manuals and books,” Swan would ask, “what manuals? What books?” In a way, this is just simple journalism and fact-checking by Jonathan Swan, but it seems notable because Trump rarely gets pressed like this.
Donald Trump spewed his typical lies about vote-by-mail and Swan debunked them at every turn. On coronavirus, Trump could not argue the facts so instead he handed pieces of paper with bogus graphs and figures to Swan as a way to demonstrate the US is doing well. Trump was later asked about John Lewis’s recent passing, and Trump made it about himself, saying “he didn’t come to my inauguration, he didn’t come to my State of the Union speeches.” Trump also defended his comments about wishing alleged child sex trafficker Ghislaine Maxwell “well.” If you thought the Chris Wallace interview was rock bottom, this one is worse.
Trump Lies for 5 Straight Minutes During Whacked Briefing
Donald Trump lied for five uninterrupted minutes during yesterday's coronavirus press briefing about vote-by-mail. Trump was asked by OAN reporter Chanel Rion about mail-in-voting and it set up Trump to go on a tirade of lies. Trump said about mail-in voting, “nobody's ever seen anything like it. It's a disgrace. I mean, honestly, it's a disgrace.” The President continued trying to make a distinction between absentee voting and vote-by-mail, but in this election, there isn’t one. He later discussed instances of voting inefficiencies and mail fraud, not seeming to understand that people getting caught undermines his argument because it proves the system is working.
There are legitimate concerns about vote-by-mail, as there are plenty of concerns about in-person voting. That does not mean we get rid of voting altogether. Instead we need to strengthen procedures, adequately fund elections, and reduce voter suppression. These are fixable issues but Trump wants to characterize vote-by-mail as inherently problematic, which doesn’t make sense. The post office has said they are more than equipped to handle the volume of ballots that are expected in the fall. Although now, Trump is trying to kneecap the post office. Trump is trying to cause problems rather than solve them, then use the problems he exacerbated as evidence for why we shouldn't have expanded absentee ballot access.
From yesterday’s show:
Trump Carries Newspapers to Pretend He Reads
Donald Trump had to defend his reading comprehension abilities in a recent interview with Jonathan Swan of Axios. This possibly led to Trump getting photographed with a stack of newspapers while on his way to play golf. This is typical Trump behavior. Instead of Trump carrying one newspaper, he has to carry a whole stack. Instead of Trump claiming he reads, he has to argue he has the best reading comprehension of anyone. This is classic Trump projection and hyperbole and it’s hard to believe anyone is convinced by it at this point.
