100 Anti-Trump Republicans Plotting Breakaway Party
Donald Trump has so divided the Republican Party that there is now a plot underway to form an anti-Trump breakaway party. One hundred former powerful Republican officials got together on a Zoom call last Friday to discuss the idea. The party would run on “principled conservative” values and it as of yet does not have a name. These politicians are essentially saying that if the Republican Party will not distance itself from Trump, then they will distance themselves from the Republican Party. One of the people involved is Evan McMullin, who ran for president in 2016 as an anti-Trump conservative.
If this plan comes into fruition, it could be an absolute nightmare for the Republican Party. There are already reports about Donald Trump creating a third party of his own, which maybe he would name the “Patriot Party.” A recent Hill-HarrisX poll found that 64% of Republican voters would join a new political party if the former president was to form one. The Republican Party cannot continue to compete for national control if either one of these third parties gain significant support. It’s even possible that these anti-Trump conservatives from a party while at the same time Trump forms a third party, and the GOP is destroyed from both ends simultaneously. We’ll see what unfolds as Republicans figure out what they’re doing while Democrats take advantage of the splintering right.
Study: 40% of Trump COVID Deaths Avoidable
A new report by the Lancet has shown that around 40% of coronavirus deaths in the United States could have been avoided if America’s COVID mortality rate were equivalent to peer nations. The coronavirus death count in the United States compared to the six other G7 nations is disproportionately high, even adjusting for the US having a high “unnecessary death” rate in non-pandemic times. This suggests that the 40% discrepancy is in large part due to bad policy. If former President Trump had taken the pandemic seriously and let the infectious disease experts take charge one year ago, hundreds of thousands of lives could have been saved. Instead, the coronavirus death count in the United States is getting close to surpassing 500,000.

Republicans SLEPT During Trump Impeachment Trial
Some Republican senators are being deliberately disrespectful of the impeachment trial against former President Trump. Mike Braun from Indiana appeared to be falling asleep at various points during this week’s arguments. Rand Paul of Kentucky doodled and was seen not wearing a mask. Cynthia Lummis of Wyoming also went maskless for most of the proceeding. Perhaps most egregiously, Josh Hawley from Missouri sat up in the gallery with his feet up on the chair in front of him, reading documents as the arguments were presented. These Republicans are all in a race to the bottom competing to see who can become the Trump heir apparent if the former president does not return to politics.
