Trump Trying AGAIN w/ Arizona "Election Audit"
Nearly six months after the 2020 election, Republican lawmakers in Arizona are ordering an audit of the state’s mail-in ballots. Last November, Joe Biden won Arizona by a mere 10,457 votes and became the first Democratic presidential candidate to carry the state in a generation. At this point, Arizona’s election results have already been certified and nothing about this recount is going to change who is the president. Even if Joe Biden had lost Arizona, he still would have won the presidency by a comfortable margin in the electoral college. But Arizona Republicans want to cast doubt on the absentee voting process so they have reason to pass voter suppression measures and so they can validate folks like Donald Trump and his pillow-selling allies who complain about widespread voter fraud.
Rudy Giuliani, Trump’s former personal attorney, went on Steve Bannon’s show over the weekend to discuss the state’s election audit. Giuliani said that this process has been going on for the last three weeks and that he and Trump have been following it super closely. It’s exceptionally sad and pathetic that they are both devoted to this voter fraud narrative but it makes sense that they continue to talk about it. Trump needs to provide cover for a loss he is embarrassed about. We know it takes a long time for Trump to get over things — he was even upset about the 2016 election because he lost the popular vote. Now they see the audit in Arizona as an opportunity to bolster the case that Biden and the Democrats stole the last race. If the audit shows even some discrepancies or adds slightly to Trump’s vote total, they will act like this was the ultimate validation and that the former president was a victim of fraud.
DESPERATE Fox News Makes Up Pathetic New "Scandals"
Almost one hundred days into the Joe Biden presidency, Fox News has been having trouble coming up with things to talk about. When Biden defeated Trump and took the White House, the network decided to revert back to how it covered the president under the Obama administration. Their hosts criticize Joe Biden for the tiniest of infractions, which looks immensely hypocritical after four years of treating Donald Trump with kid gloves. The other problem for Fox News is that Biden, by comparison, has had a highly successful first stage of his presidency. The coronavirus vaccination program is rolling out quicker than expected, with 28% of Americans now fully vaccinated and tens of millions more now partially vaccinated. The $1.9 trillion American Rescue Plan has also boosted Biden’s popularity and left Fox News with little to criticize.
Fox, still needing some content to fill the airwaves, has been doing its best to manufacture ridiculous scandals against the new president. One such “scandal” is the idea that Biden’s climate plan will force Americans to reduce their red meat consumption by 90%. Unsurprisingly, this is a mischaracterization and not actually one of Biden’s policy proposals, but some on right-wing media have been treating it like it is. The figure comes from a study out of the University of Michigan and it’s not at all related to Biden’s climate plan. Fox host Judge Jeanine spent a portion of her weekend show fearmongering about Biden wanting to ban burgers, which is not true. Her colleague, Larry Kudlow, managed to make the controversy even stupider by saying Americans will have to “throw back a plant-based beer” on the 4th of July. Apparently, Kudlow did not realize that beer is already plant-based. If the Biden presidency continues at its current rate of success, right-wing media is going to be in for a long four years.
From over the weekend:
Chris Christie Believed to Be Running (Against Trump?) in 2024
Former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie is considering running for president again in 2024, according to people familiar with his thinking. It is, however, unclear at this point whether Christie would run if Donald Trump decides to run again for a second term. Christie’s appeal as a tough-talking conservative will only work if Trump is not in the race. Case in point, the former New Jersey governor came up well short of winning the 2016 GOP nomination and eventually had to (literally) get behind Trump. Christie has grown more willing to criticize Trump in recent months, notably on the topics of coronavirus and the January 6th Capitol insurrection. If Trump doesn’t run, somewhat normal Republican candidates like Christie and former UN Ambassador Nikki Haley will have to battle a number of right-wing nuts trying to carry along the Trump torch.
