Ketanji Brown Jackson Confirmed to Supreme Court
Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson has been confirmed to the Supreme Court after a vote in the Senate of 53-47. Three Republican senators, Mitt Romney, Susan Collins, and Lisa Murkowski, joined all of the Democrats to support her confirmation to the bench. Jackson will become the first black woman ever on the Supreme Court and by many metrics she will be the most qualified judge to ever get there. KBJ has served as a public defender, worked on a sentencing commission, was a district and appellate judge and at one time clerked for Justice Stephen Breyer, whom she will soon be replacing. Most of the Senate Republicans did what they could to stop her confirmation, even though they often couldn’t articulate why exactly they opposed her. This is the first of a so far unknown number of justices that President Biden will get to select to the bench and an excellent choice at that.
Mehmet Oz's Absurd Supermarket Performance
Republican US Senate candidate from Pennsylvania Mehmet Oz performed a ridiculous stunt wherein he went grocery shopping to make himself seem like a relatable person. Oz wanted to make the point that it’s expensive to buy produce these days because of President Biden’s policies. He picked out some broccoli, asparagus, carrots, guacamole, and salsa and complained about the prices being too high for everything. As a doctor, Mehmet Oz could have used this stunt as an opportunity to show people how to buy vegetables more economically and how to eat a more well-balanced diet. The $4 bag of carrots he picked out for example, was enormous and he clearly didn’t need that many for the crudité plate he was supposedly making. This was a totally missed opportunity for Oz, and he ultimatley just looked like a confused man fumbling around in a grocery store.
From yesterday’s show:
Marjorie Taylor Greene is Going to Get Somebody Killed
Marjorie Taylor Greene continues to make dangerous statements to the point where there’s a realistic possibility that she could end up getting someone killed. Greene has been talking all week about how anyone who supports Ketanji Brown Jackson’s nomination to the Supreme Court is pro-pedophilia because in some of the cases she tried, like in child porn cases, she gave more lenient sentences than the prosecution asked for. It is standard practice after someone has been found guilty for judges to weigh aggravating and mitigating circumstances to decide what the sentence should be and often the sentence will fall in between what the defense and prosecution teams want. Greene, playing ignorant about this, boiled this down into saying Judge Jackson is pro-pedophile and anyone who supports her is too. This week, Greene called out fellow Republicans Mitt Romney, Susan Collins, and Lisa Murkowski for voting for Jackson and she went on Real America’s Voice to say “the Democrats are the party of pedophiles.” This is dangerous rhetoric that could realistically inspire somebody to do harm against the people she’s calling out.
From yesterday’s show:
LOL: Republican Has to Backtrack on Definition of Woman
Missouri Senator Josh Hawley had to backtrack on his definition of a ”woman,” proving it’s not as simple as many of these Republicans suspect. The backstory on this is that Tennessee Senator Marsha Blackburn asked Supreme Court nominee Ketanji Brown Jackson to define a “woman” during her confirmation hearings, and Judge Jackson said she could not offer such a blanket definition. Republicans ridiculed KBJ for not being able to answer the question, but it turns out even they’re having trouble answering it themselves. Senator Hawley was asked by the Huffington Post to define a woman and he said, “someone who can give birth to a child, a mother, is a woman. Someone who has a uterus is a woman. It doesn’t seem that complicated to me.” This prompted the reporter to ask, “if a woman has her uterus removed by a hysterotomy, is she still a woman?” This sent Hawley into a tailspin as providing an accurate answer to such a seemingly simple question wasn’t as easy as he thought. This reemphasizes that Judge Jackson was right not to play into Senator Blackburn’s word games and these definitions can often be more complicated than initially believed.
