Trump's 1st 2024 campaign rally goes bad quick
Failed former President Donald Trump held his first official 2024 rally in Waco, Texas over the weekend, which opened with apocalyptic messaging and imagery reminiscent of the 30th anniversary of the siege at Waco of the Branch Davidians. During the rally, Trump claimed that 2024 is the “final battle” and that only he can make America free again. He also claimed that a famous man recently asked him how he puts his clothes on, which left many people baffled. The crowd at the rally was initially animated and many of them waited for hours on end in the Texas heat to see the former president. However, they quickly settled down once they heard Trump talk about topics like how he supposedly passed a brain injury screening test. Trump also addressed the Stormy Daniels hush money controversy that could wind up getting him charged with a crime. Trump called Daniels “horse face” and alluded to her not being attractive enough to sleep with, which is probably not the best strategy to take if he wants to better appeal to independent female voters in 2024.
We interviewed Trump supporters at his rally, goes HORRIBLY WRONG
TDPS correspondent Luke Beasley attended the Trump rally in Waco, Texas over the weekend and interviewed a number of Trump supporters. One of the topics discussed was gay marriage. Luke spoke to a man who believed gay marriage was “anti-life” and went on to argue that the reason for marriage was to reproduce. However, Luke pointed out that infertile couples were also allowed to marry, and the man eventually conceded that they should still be able to get married. Another topic discussed was the Sandy Hook conspiracy theory. Luke spoke to a man who believed that the parents of the murdered children were lying about being harassed and that there were crisis actors involved. He also wore an "Alex Jones was Right" t-shirt and repeated many of the conspiracy theories surrounding the event. Luke tried to reason with the man by pointing out the facts, but he remained convinced that the government was hiding the truth and that it was all a conspiracy to take Alex Jones down. Overall, the interviews highlighted the challenges of trying to have a rational conversation with people who hold extreme right-wing views.
From over the weekend:
SHRINKAGE: Ron DeSantis polls collapsing before campaign even starts
Ron DeSantis’s star appears to be fading as his polling numbers in a hypothetical 2024 Republican primary matchup have been declining versus Donald Trump. It is believed that DeSantis's successes in Florida are alienating him from voters in battleground states, who are still stinging from Republican losses by candidates who embraced the right-most reaches of the political spectrum. Additionally, DeSantis lacks charisma and that is becoming more visible to voters as he holds more events and interviews. This is deflating any excitement right-wingers once had for him, especially those who saw him as a natural successor to Trump. A number of polls show that DeSantis is now trailing Trump by a significant margin, which raises questions about whether he should declare his candidacy at all. Some have suggested that DeSantis should wait until 2028 to run since he’s only 44 years old now and in four years Trump will be out of the way. DeSantis will have to make his final decision in the next few months, and it’s not clear so far whether he’s made up his mind.
From over the weekend:
RNC Chair admits she's lost control of Trump vs DeSantis primary
Ronna McDaniel, Chairwoman of the Republican National Committee, went on Fox Business with Stuart Varney last week and admitted that she has lost control of the 2024 Republican primary. Varney asked McDaniel, “how are you going to manage this clash between Trump and DeSantis?” She followed up by saying, “Stuart, I would be lying if I said I'm going to be able to manage this. There's going to be sharp elbows. There will be a heated primary process. What I will say is we have to keep our eyes on the prize.” McDaniel at one point was trying to control the process by instituting a policy saying any debate participants would have to pledge to support the party’s eventual nominee. Clearly, Donald Trump is not going to accept this condition in good faith, and McDaniel seems to be aware of that and is thus beginning to back down from trying to control the process.
