It's True, Some Cops Helped the Trump Rioters
Some members of the United States Capitol Police Department are under scrutiny for their role in allegedly aiding in the attack on the Capitol building last week. Officers were caught on video looking the other way while rioters were breaking in. At least one officer took a selfie with an insurrectionist and made no physical attempt to stop the mob. Others seemed to confuse the right to protest with taking over the Capitol during a constitutionally mandated joint session of Congress. These officers need to be held accountable and investigations need to be conducted to ensure a breach like this never happens again.
To be clear, most of the police officers at the Capitol last Wednesday did their jobs to the best of their abilities. Many are being hailed as heroes for bravely standing up to the mob and holding them off long enough for lawmakers to get to safety. Eugene Goodman is one such hero. He made himself a decoy and successfully lured the insurrectionists away from the Senate chamber. Officers like Goodman need to be rewarded for their courage, while the cops who stood by and allowed the coup attempt to happen need to be fired and held accountable.
Tucker Carlson Doesn't Understand How Capitalism Works
One of the most interesting side stories in the wake of the Trump coup attempt is Simon & Schuster cutting ties with Republican Senator Josh Hawley and refusing to publish his upcoming book. Hawley led the charge to commit a legislative coup to block Biden’s victory from being certified last week. He also kept fighting for Trump even after the Capitol was taken over by a mob and the lives of his fellow lawmakers were put in jeopardy. Simon & Schuster made the decision that Josh Hawley’s sedition and complicity were something they didn’t want to be affiliated with.
Senator Hawley went on Tucker Carlson’s Fox News show this week to defend his actions and complain about the publishing company. They tried to argue that Simon & Schuster was trying to cancel Hawley over engaging in “free speech” and serving his constituents. This analysis fails on a number of different fronts: Simon & Schuster has every right as a business to cut ties with people they find to be toxic and damaging to its brand. No one has a “right” to have their book published. Furthermore, there are limits on free speech. Incitement of insurrection is not protected by the First Amendment. Either Tucker Carlson and Josh Hawley don’t realize the free speech argument doesn’t make sense or they’re knowingly trying to fool people with it.
From yesterday’s show:
Trump Suspended from Twitter FOR LIFE
Donald Trump has been banned from Twitter and a number of other social media platforms following the riots at the US Capitol last week. Initially, Trump was just suspended for a twenty-four hour period from Twitter, but shortly after getting his account reinstated, Trump got permanently banned. The news enraged Trump so much he went “ballistic” and tried to find a workaround. He tweeted from the POTUS account but his posts were taken down within minutes. Trump then signed up for a Parler account, which led to Google and Apple no longer supporting the app and Amazon canceling Parler’s webhosting. He’ll just have to keep searching for a new alternative social media outlet.
