They HATE Critical Race Theory, But Don't Know What It Is
One of the newest right-wing buzz phrases is “critical race theory” and conservatives are making it a central focus in their culture war campaign. Simply put, critical race theory is based on critiquing conventional legal and scholarly norms about racial issues. Naturally, the right is vehemently against the teaching of CRT in schools, want to sign bans into law, and likely think it’s part of a communist or socialist takeover as well. The problem for many of these folks, however, is that they don’t know what critical race theory is. Case in point, there was conversation between TV personality Marc Lamont Hill and former Georgia Congressman Vernon Jones — a Trump favorite. Jones went on Hill’s BNC News show to talk about critical race theory. After having Jones stake out his position on the topic, Hill asked him a very simple question: “What is critical race theory?”
Rather than offer a definition of critical race theory, which Jones thinks needs to be banned, he went off into a tangent about how it’s different depending on who you ask and that as kids they were taught that Christopher Columbus discovered America. Hill brought the conversation back, saying “what does that have to do with critical theory?” It has become standard Republican practice to latch onto these terms without actually knowing what they mean. Another perfect example of this is with the word “socialism.” Very few conservatives have an understanding of socialism as the workers owning the means of production and the workplace becoming democratized. The right-wing idea of socialism is about “free stuff” combined with whichever cultural issues they consider relevant at the time.
National Guard Soldier Charged for Trump Riot Participation
The arrests continue for the people involved in the January 6th Trump riots. The Justice Department has so far charged approximately 400 people who unlawfully entered the Capitol building that day. It’s estimated that 800-1,000 Trumpists made their way inside in total and the FBI remains dedicated to finding as many of them as possible. One of the latest arrests was that of a soldier in the Wisconsin National Guard for his involvement in the insurrection. The person in question is Abram Markofski, who traveled to DC with an associate and the pair spent approximately 40 minutes inside the building. Dozens of veterans have been charged for their roles in the riots but Markofsi is part of a smaller group, as a current member of the military. In looking at the Uniform Code of Military Justice, it’s possible Markofski could be court martialed, as he was arguably part of a soft coup attempt. Stories like these will continue, as the legal battles from January 6th are likely to go on for many years.
From yesterday’s show:
HUMILIATING: Fox Host Reduced to Arguing with 11-Year-Old Kid
Fox News host Brian Kilmeade was reduced to arguing with an 11-year-old child during a segment of his show called “Failing our Children.” Apparently, the young guests were all supposed to feed into the right-wing narrative about Democratic politicians wanting to keep school closed. But one of the kids on the panel was not buying it and instead praised President Biden for getting the country to a position where schools can start to open safely. Instead of Kilmeade speaking to his guest like a child and encouraging him for sharing his viewpoint, Kilmeade sounded offended that someone would dare come on his show and disagree with him. The 57-year-old Fox host responded with, “really? That’s hard to believe because the last president was saying ‘I want every kid back in school.’” Kilmeade then moved onto the next guest without allowing a response. Leave it to Brian Kilmeade to speak that way to a bright 11-year-old kid on national television.
