Painfully Deranged Trump CPAC Speech Sets New Records
Donald Trump made yet another public appearance yesterday, speaking at the 2021 Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC). The speech lacked any policy substance, despite it going on for an hour and a half. Instead, the former president rambled on about moments from his presidency, roasted his political enemies, and complained that Democrats only won in 2020 because of voter fraud. At various points throughout the speech, and in the lead-up speeches, members of the crowd blurted out “Trump won,” each time sparking an eruption of applause. The conservative movement at this point is all about placating Trump’s ego and ending democracy in the United States, a far cry from the low tax, less government, and strong military mantra they fought for not that long ago. Trump blamed the media on his defeat, saying that if only they had reported on Joe and Hunter Biden’s “scandals,” he would have won in the crucial swing states. He then went on to clarify that he did win regardless and “won those states anyway” but that those who counted the votes mattered more than the people actually voting.
When Trump wasn’t complaining about “voter fraud,” he was criticizing the Joe Biden presidency. He claimed that “in a matter of mere months, Joe Biden has brought our country to the brink of ruin.” Later he fearmongered about migrant caravans, which he claimed to have once shut down, saying “get ready, because they're coming up right now.” Trump continued his rebuke of wind turbines and alternative energy, saying “we don’t need windmills in Texas and lots of other places. We don’t need windmills. They ought to end that program as quickly as they can.” The crowd agreed, booing wind turbines for some bizarre reason. The overall tone and tenor of the speech implied that the ex-POTUS has no plans to stay silent over the next few years. He comfortably won the CPAC straw poll on who should be the Republican nominee for 2024. More than likely, Trump will be back and take on Joe Biden or Kamala Harris in the next presidential race.
GIGA-CRINGE: Trump Supporters Interviewed at CPAC
Right-wing media interviewed attendees at this year’s Conservative Political Action Conference in Dallas, Texas. Despite the people being interviewed not really having a solid grasp on the political issues of the day, what they did know how to do is effect change at the grassroots level and come up with strategies to win in the future. One woman said that she’s an activist and that “we need to get back into the neighborhoods,” emphasizing the need for “organizing precincts and voter registration.” Another interviewee said that if parents are upset with topics that are being discussed in their children’s schools, they need to go to their local school board meeting and pressure the board members to bring about change. As wacky as these people’s beliefs are, they seem to understand that winning long term requires being involved at the local level and all the way up. Republicans do know what they’re doing in this sense and Democrats need to catch up if they want any chance at holding onto power over the next few years.
From over the weekend:
If Trump Runs in 2024, Joe and Kamala Are In Real Trouble
Donald Trump is gearing up for a third run for president in 2024 and there are many signs pointing to it spelling trouble for Democrats. The 2024 race may become a rematch of the 2020 race. Or if Joe Biden chooses not to seek a second term because of his age, it could be a Trump vs. Kamala Harris showdown. Whether it’s Biden, Harris, or someone else on the Democratic ticket, the left could struggle to build the same amount of excitement and sense of urgency that they did in 2020. The memory of Trump as president will become more distanced and even whitewashed to some degree. Progressives and left-leaning independents may grow complacent as they arguably did back in 2016, whereas the right will be reinvigorated and offer everything they have to get their candidate back in office. In order to defeat Trump once and for all in a “final showdown,” Democrats will need to maintain their 2020 level of enthusiasm and involvement in the political process and it’s up to us to make that happen.
