Trump Horrifies World at Most Alarming Rally Ever
Over the weekend, Donald Trump held another one of his “Save America” rallies, this time in Des Moines, Iowa, and it was as clear as ever that the ex-president still holds his supporters in the palm of his hand. At one point during the rally, Trump referenced being the victim of voter fraud in the 2020 election and the crowd saw it as a cue to prop up his ego by chanting “Trump won” over and over again. He also seemed to forget that he’s no longer president, saying that he is going to “quickly complete the border wall” which is something he has been promising for over six years at this point. The ex-POTUS also fearmongered about Afghan refugees coming to the United States, saying “we’re going to be hearing from those people over the coming years in a very bad way.” Trump delivered some old Republican red meat to the audience, falsely claiming that Democrats support “killing babies even after birth.” He mixed that in with some new Republican red meat about how he wants to ban critical race theory, calling it “that horrible, crazy critical race theory.” In attendance at the event were prominent Republican figures like Iowa Senator Chuck Grassley, who clearly wanted to show everyone that they still support Trump and view him as the path to Republicans controlling the government again over the next few years.
Tucker Goes Full Conspiracy in Outrageous Rant
Tucker Carlson keeps going further down the rabbit hole of conspiracy theories as it helps drive even more attention to his highly-watched nighttime Fox News show. At this point, Carlson sounds basically like a mostly emotionally-stable version of Alex Jones. Case in point, last week on his program, Tucker did a segment on his show suggesting that there was something suspicious about Joe Biden doing televised appearances from a set in the Eisenhower executive office building. Tucker said there were plenty of rooms available for Biden to do a press event in the White House and found it bizarre that he would choose to do it across the street instead. He then suggested it was all so Biden would be able to read a teleprompter so he wouldn’t need to speak off the cuff, which doesn’t make sense, because presidents regularly deliver written speeches using prompters from the White House. He also half-heartedly argued Joe Biden isn’t really in charge of the country, which has been a talking point lately among conservatives. Tucker hammered home the “Biden isn’t really in charge” theory on his show some more during an interview with former Trump national security adviser Michael Flynn, wherein the two parroted QAnon conspiracy theories about a shadow deep state government run by Obama. Sadly, Carlson’s commentary is likely to continue down this conspiratorial path because of the positive reinforcement he is getting from his audience.
From over the weekend:
Newsmax Host Suggest Democrats Set Up Trump Riots
Newsmax host Greg Kelly suggested on his program that Democrats may have planned and carried out the January 6th Capitol riots as a way to make Republicans look bad. He said, “January 6th is another fixture in the Land of Make Believe that this was the worst thing that ever happened. Not that it was a trespassing event, not that Democrats may have had a hand in setting the conditions and even perhaps setting the whole thing up. There’s something to talk about there.” Obviously, Kelly provided no evidence to show how Democrats “had a hand” in the insurrection because there isn’t any. But he feels comfortable saying that to his audience without any proof because he knows he doesn’t need to actually show his work for them to believe it. Right wingers who are trying to rewrite the story about January 6th need to be held accountable, but sadly for Newsmax hosts like Greg Kelly there’s not much that can be done to make that happen. The inciters in Congress can be voted out and the people who actually carried out the insurrection can be criminally prosecuted. But for as long as there is a market for Trump supporters trying to whitewash history, folks like Greg Kelly will continue to have a hosting job at television stations like Newsmax.
From over the weekend:
Matt Gaetz Calls Facebook Whistleblower an Obama False Flag
Matt Gaetz had some comments about the Facebook whistleblower, Frances Haugen, saying she’s being advised by former Obama staffers and writing off her revelations about the social media company as a “false flag.” The Florida congressman went on OAN and said, “when you get down to the core of what she wants, it is a basis for Facebook to be able to discriminate against viewpoints that they don’t particularly like.” Gaetz’s take is essentially that these revelations are meant to further suppress right-wing opinions on Facebook. But right-wing viewpoints dominate the platform with folks like Ben Shapiro, Dan Bongino, and Sean Hannity continually getting the most trafficked political posts. Gaetz’s colleague Congressman Madison Cawthorn also had something to say about the whistleblower story on Fox Business. He said that he believes Haugen was there “to try and advocate for more censorship and less freedom of speech because this is an anti-competition marketplace for Facebook.” But Haugen, in her congressional testimony and in her 60 Minutes interview, didn’t argue for that so Cawthorn’s “belief” isn’t actually based on anything. For months if not years now, Republicans have been arguing that Facebook and other social media platforms need to be regulated. Now that the early steps of that may be happening, people like Matt Gaetz and Madison Cawthorn change their tune and all of a sudden don’t seem to want it anymore.
