Ted Cruz Caught Scrolling Phone During Trump Riot Hearings
Senator Ted Cruz, Republican of Texas, was seen scrolling through his phone during a harrowing opening testimony yesterday on the January 6th Capitol riots. Former Chief of Capitol Police Steven Sund testified before a joint hearing of the Senate Rules Committee and the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee. Sund’s appearance was part of a continued effort to investigate the planning of the Capitol attack and whether any members of Congress aided the rioters. Cruz did not seem to care about the testimony, since it was about an insurrection which he helped inspire. The Texas senator, after all, led a legislative coup on January 6th, moving to throw out the votes of millions of Americans because he didn’t like that they voted for Joe Biden.
Senator Ron Johnson, Republican of Wisconsin, also managed to make a fool out of himself during the hearing. Johnson floated baseless conspiracy theories about left-wing insurgents pretending to be Trump supporters at the Capitol that day. He also tried to excuse the rioters of their wrongdoing because some happened to be old, overweight, and had flags and shirts that indicated support for the police. While it’s absurd for Johnson to say this, his message is a prominent one among many Trump supporters across the country. People like Cruz and Johnson need to be voted out at the soonest opportunity because they were so eagerly willing to toss out democracy and the Constitution for Donald Trump.
I Confronted an Anti-Vaxxer. It Didn't Go Well
A concerned TDPS viewer wrote into the show to voice their displeasure with our coverage of the coronavirus vaccines. This person is an anti-vaxxer who believes David knows vaccines are a scam and “causing deaths.” When we wrote back saying that no one has died from getting a COVID shot, this viewer insisted that they have “the proof” and that they were willing to send it to us. We took them up on the offer, but were met with terms like “CDC documents” and “lawsuits” instead of any concrete evidence. The unfortunate thing is that this opinion is not limited to just one viewer. Vaccine skepticism has been a problem in the United States for decades and now it’s becoming a much more acute issue with the nationwide inoculation effort. Vaccine hesitancy could result in a struggle for the US to get 70% or 75% of its population immunized, delaying when we can get back to “normal.”
From yesterday’s show:
Republicans Blame Non-Existent Green New Deal for Power Failures
Republican politicians continue to blame the Green New Deal for last week’s power outages in Texas. Senator Ted Cruz, still trying to recover from his Cancun scandal, went on Sean Hannity’s show and said “one of the major elements” of the power failure was the Green New Deal. The biggest problem with this assessment is that the Green New Deal is not the law in the United States, nor is it in Texas. This also happens to be the wrong take because it’s not renewable energy sources that alone shut down the electrical grid. Traditional energy sources, like coal, natural gas, and nuclear power, also failed Texas during the storm. Being isolated from the other two power grids in the contiguous United States was also an issue because Texas could not get backup from other states. Republicans are wrong and often lying when they make claims like renewable energy sources being the reason for the Texas power failure.
