Possibly the Dumbest Segment in Newsmax History
This week, political strategist Dick Morris appeared on Newsmax to discuss the recent grocery store mass shooting in Boulder, Colorado. Right-wing media outlets like Fox and Newsmax have taken more of an interest in the Colorado shooting than last week’s massage parlor shootings in Georgia. This is most likely because while the Georgia perpetrator was white, the Colorado suspect is Muslim and originally from Syria. Morris made an especially dumb take on the latest mass shooting by trying to connect it to President Biden’s immigration policy. He called it an “overwhelming point” that the alleged killer was a Syrian refugee and Syrian refugees were not allowed in under Trump but now are under Biden. This point didn’t make any sense, since the shooter came to the United States when he was three years old, many years before the Trump or Biden administrations.
Morris managed to make less and less sense as he went on. He argued that if “Democrats are so worried about gun violence, the most important thing you can do about gun violence is to institute the stop-and-frisk policy that New York City had.” Morris then falsely described stop-and-frisk as cops stopping people they witnessed carrying guns, rather than police searching anyone they suspect to be carrying weapons or other contraband. The policy was discontinued in New York for being unconstitutional and disproportionately affecting minority populations. It’s also a stretch to say a nationwide stop-and-frisk policy could have prevented this shooting or that it would be more effective than banning certain firearms or other gun control measures. Morris managed to pile on many dumb right-wing talking points in a tight segment on the network that is perhaps most receptive to them.
OOPS: Marjorie Taylor Greene Ally ON VIDEO at Trump Riot
There is now video footage from the January 6th insurrection that confirms a close ally of Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene made his way inside the Capitol building. The person in question is Anthony Aguero, a right-wing live-streamer and associate of the Republican lawmaker. Aguero declined to comment on the newly surfaced video, as did Marjorie Taylor Greene’s office. Greene worked with Aguero on anti-immigration initiatives in the past and they attended pro-Trump rallies together. CNN reports that Aguero considered Greene to be one of his “closest friends.” Questions remain over whether or not insiders like members of Congress assisted the rioters, something currently under investigation. At the very least, the congresswoman was not keeping great company.
From yesterday’s show:
33% of Republican Voters Think Republicans Voted for COVID Cash (They Didn't)
A new poll by Data for Progress and Vox found that 33% of Republican voters believed that their party supported the $1.9 trillion American Rescue Plan recently signed into law by President Biden. Another 17% of GOP voters reported not to know whether Republican lawmakers backed the legislation. The truth is that zero Republicans in the House or Senate voted for the bill, even though many have taken credit for parts of the bill. In contrast, just 16% of Democrats and 16% of independents believed GOP lawmakers supported the stimulus plan. This is how the Republican Party continues to survive. While they are not effective at serving the American people, they have done enough to trick their base into believing that they are.
