Cops Caught Beating Cyclist w/Batons, Destroying Medical
New York Police Department officers have been caught on video beating a cyclist with batons as he tries to cross the street. The cyclist can be seen wearing a helmet and riding his bike at a crosswalk and several officers attack him from behind. Also this week, police officers in Asheville, North Carolina were caught on video destroying a medical station that had a supply of first-aid kits and bottles of water.
Incidents like these point to an institutional and systemic crisis when it comes to policing in America. It goes beyond a discussion about good cops vs. bad cops or some cops simply being bad eggs. Of course, police around the country are mostly doing the right thing and respecting the rights of protesters, but we see far too many examples like the ones in New York and Asheville. What makes it even more tragic is this is what happens when the protests are largely focused on stopping police brutality in the first place.
Trump Will Not Go Peacefully If Defeated
Donald Trump’s reelection chances are no doubt in question, and while much can change between now and November, Trump is positioning himself to be a one-term president. But will he leave peacefully? There has always been a concern that Trump will not willingly vacate office if he is defeated, and the events of the last week certainly attest to that. He is threatening Americans expressing their First Amendment rights to protest and he’s willing to use the military to carry it out. Trump could very well be foreshadowing the authoritarian crackdown he’ll conduct if he loses in the fall.
What this speaks to, is that Trump has never cared about American values or the Constitution. Trump’s priority has always been personal power. We have to be prepared for him to challenge the results in November. And this is not about Trump declaring martial law or declaring himself king; I do believe he will ultimately leave office if he is defeated. But we have to ensure that our institutions are prepared to remove him if/when that happens.
Popular yesterday: Trump Sees 2020 Map, PANICS
Donald Trump’s campaign team is looking at the 2020 electoral map and panicking. Joe Biden is up by as many as 11 points nationally against Trump and leading in many of the battleground states. While a lot can change between now and November, Biden certainly has the easier path to victory at the moment. To pull it off, Trump would need to carry Ohio and Florida, two states which he is currently losing.
