Vaccinated Colin Powell Dead from COVID Complications
Colin Powell, former Secretary of State, Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman, and National Security Adviser, has died at the age of 84 due to complications from COVID-19. Positive moments from Powell’s life in public serve include when he criticized what the Republican Party turned into under Donald Trump and when he called out Americans who believed Barack Obama to be a Muslim — as if that would be a bad thing even if true. Of course, Powell also had shameful moments like when he gave credibility to the Bush administration’s assertions that there were weapons of mass destruction in Iraq. Powell was fully vaccinated from COVID, but got a breakthrough case that ultimately turned deadly. Hopefully people don’t hear this news and think it means there’s no point in getting inoculated because the truth is that the risks of succumbing to coronavirus are many times lower for the fully vaccinated. According to public data of hospitalizations and deaths for 2021, 84% of hospitalizations were of the unvaccinated and just 0.5% of the deaths were of the vaccinated. Although rare, fatal breakthrough infections can happen, especially for the elderly, and sadly Powell was one of those cases.
Tucker Carlson Goes Full Homophobe on Pete Buttigieg
Tucker Carlson went on a homophobic rant about Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg on his Fox News show last week. Tucker criticized Buttigieg for taking time off from his job after adopting twin children with his husband Chasten. Carlson said in his monologue, “Pete Buttigieg has been on leave from his job since August after adopting a child. Paternity leave as they call it, trying to figure out how to breastfeed, no word on how that went.” This is some low brow-bigotry from Carlson and an attempt to feminize Pete Buttigieg because he’s gay. Surely most of Tucker’s audience must love the commentary but one would think that even Fox News by this point would have moved beyond allowing that sort of rhetoric on its airwaves. The Transportation Secretary went on CNN’s State of the Union to respond to the attack by the Fox host and said he’s “not going to apologize to Tucker Carlson or anyone else for taking care of [his] premature newborn infant twins.” Indeed it’s Tucker who should be apologizing for making such a statement but such an apology is unlikely going to be coming anytime soon.

Trump Rally Attendees Completely Delusional
Donald Trump held a rally in Iowa about a week ago and his supporters in attendance were interviewed by Real America’s Voice and Right Side Broadcasting. One of the people interviewed said that she moved from Alaska to Iowa in part because it would allow her to go to this rally. Another woman said that she’s upset with her family because she “raised them all liberal” but they don’t like Donald Trump. She then began to tear up, saying that people have to work together for the good of the country. Lastly, a man who brought a bunch of documents with him was interviewed and he said he was doing his best to get the paperwork into the hands of Trump so that Trump can hand it over to his legal team. The documents said in part, “our King Jesus Christ has spoken to put you back in your office at the White House now.” If this was supposed to be legal paperwork, it’s hard to see what relevance the courts would find in the religious references. While it’s hard to tell what motivates people to attend these rallies and behave in such a way, we know it’s going to be very difficult to deprogram such delusions.

Trump Says Haitian Migrants Have AIDS in Bonkers Fox Interview
Donald Trump was interviewed by Sean Hannity on Fox News recently with the focus mainly being about attacking the Biden administration. The largest headline from the exchange was Trump claiming Haitian immigrants are brining diseases with them as they make their way into the United States. The former president said, “so we have hundreds of thousands of people flowing in from Haiti. Haiti has a tremendous AIDS problem. AIDS is a step beyond. AIDS is a real bad problem.” Trump’s claim is dubious because the number of people immigrating from Haiti doesn’t tally anywhere near the level he is claiming. Secondly, although AIDS is a problem in Haiti relative to other countries, it’s relevance it’s questionable given that it’s not an airborne disease like COVID is. Clearly Trump was just trying to use the right-wing trope that immigration should be avoided at all costs because the people moving here are supposedly infected with disease. This kind of talk has permeated from Trump into the American right wing at large and it needs to get called out as wrong every time.
