Cancel Culture is a Right-Wing Lie to Attack the Left
The American right is out of power and out of ideas. Conservatives are beginning to recognize that their policy agenda is unpopular among huge swaths of the population. Republican presidential candidates have now lost the popular vote in seven of the last eight elections and they don’t currently hold the White House, the Senate, or the House of Representatives. They were wrong on COVID and just a few months ago, backed a coup attempt by an authoritarian president who decisively lost reelection. Knowing they have to shift gears to some degree, but unable to move beyond Trump, the American right has begun to focus more on the issue they think will propel them back into national relevance — cancel culture.
Cancel culture is the idea that people are being ostracized from social and professional circles over their past actions and statements. Many on the right claim that far too many people, brands, and products have fallen victim to unjust cancel culture. To the extent that this is even an issue in the country, it’s probably not even on the list of the top 100 issues facing the United States. Occasionally there are unfair firings and in a nation of over 300 million people, one can certainly find examples of that. However, as we’ve seen from Fox News canceling Lou Dobbs’s show and Young Pharaoh losing his CPAC speaking gig, conservatives are often perpetrators of “cancelations” as well. Cancel culture is mostly a ruse to serve right-wing goals. Republicans will keep this distraction going for as long as they find it useful and then they will move on to the next reason to be scared and/or outraged.
Trump Confronted About Riots During FOX NEWS Interview!
Donald Trump gave an interview to Fox News after concluding his rant at CPAC over the weekend. Unsurprisingly, the former president did not bring up the January 6th Capitol insurrection during his CPAC speech, so Fox host Steve Hilton felt compelled to ask him about it. Hilton brought up reports about how Trump was watching gleefully on television as the events of the day unfolded and asked if Trump understood the gravity of the situation as it was taking place and in hindsight. True to form, Trump said it was “incorrect reporting” and bragged about the size of the rally at the Ellipse before the riots, calling it a “love fest” with “hundred of thousands of people and more than that.” Trump went on to blame House Speaker Nancy Pelosi for not securing the Capitol building before the attack.
Trump was then asked if he was happier without having social media accounts like Twitter. He responded by saying he’s pleased to not have to worry about making spelling and grammar mistakes while typing out the tweets (even though every tweet needed corrections anyway). The former president went on to suggest that being off Twitter has helped his poll numbers. He said, “I think they’re the highest they’ve ever been.” This is untrue of course, as Trump left office with a personal-worst 29%-34% approval rating. Even though his presidency has ended, the lies have continued and there is no sign of Trump moderating his tone, attempting to live in reality, or leaving the public spotlight any time soon.
From yesterday’s show:
Biden Bombs Syria with $15 Min Wage in Question
Over the weekend, Joe Biden made his first offensive military action as president, by launching airstrikes in Syria. The administration claims the attack targeted Iranian-backed militants in the region. They said in a statement, “those non-state militia groups were involved in recent attacks against United States and Coalition personnel in Iraq, including the February 15, 2021, attack in Erbil, Iraq, which wounded one United States service member, [and] wounded four United States contractors.” Also over the weekend, the Senate Parliamentarian ruled that a $15 minimum wage cannot be included in the COVID stimulus budget reconciliation bill. While Democrats could overturn this advisory opinion, it does not appear as though they have any intention of doing so. By attacking Syria while giving up on the minimum wage hike, President Biden did a lot over the weekend to damage his reputation among progressives.
