Mikie Sherrill, Democratic nominee for New Jersey governor, discussed her campaign priorities and the political challenges facing the state following a sharp Republican swing in the 2024 election. She attributed the shift not to an increase in GOP enthusiasm, but to low Democratic turnout—roughly 500,000 Democrats stayed home while about 50,000 more voters turned out for Trump. Sherrill identified economic dissatisfaction as a key factor and emphasized affordability as the cornerstone of her platform, particularly focusing on New Jersey’s severe housing crisis. She outlined plans to repurpose underused commercial properties, incentivize development near transit hubs, and overcome regulatory hurdles to expand housing supply in the nation’s most densely populated state. These efforts, she argued, helped drive a record Democratic turnout in the 2025 primary, far surpassing past benchmarks.
On immigration and law enforcement, Sherrill committed to upholding constitutional protections and due process, expressing strong skepticism toward any agreements with ICE that don’t meet those standards. She voiced deep concern about the erosion of legal norms under Trump’s leadership and rejected the idea of using military force for domestic immigration enforcement. Looking ahead to national elections in 2026 and 2028, Sherrill stressed that Democrats must go beyond criticizing Republican extremism and offer concrete policy solutions to improve people’s lives. For her, that means tackling affordability at the state level—lowering healthcare and energy costs, boosting housing supply, and demanding more effective governance from Trenton. She positioned herself as a pragmatic leader focused on delivering results rather than rhetoric.
