REPORT: Trump Preparing for Criminal Indictment
A new report from the New York Times' Maggie Haberman indicates that the recent Biden-Putin summit caused Trump to realize that he will not, in fact, be “reinstated” as president. So now, the former POTUS is diverting his attention to something else. Trump is reportedly now preparing with his legal team for a criminal indictment that they believe could be coming. Haberman said on CNN, “he is missing a level of protection that he felt like he had when he was in the White House. Some kind of, if not actual full immunity, some kind of level of belief that we’re not going to charge a sitting president. I think that he is talking about keeping his political options alive because he sees it in part as a shield against what could be coming.” Trump very well could run again in 2024 and perhaps he hasn’t made up his mind yet. However as Haberman points out, Trump could be doing all of these interviews, trying to get back on social media and staying relevant in political circles all because he wants to avoid prosecution. His team may suspect that investigators would be leery of charging someone who they suspect could become the chief executive again.
According to Haberman’s reporting, Trump is taking meetings at Trump Tower on the possibility of a criminal indictment. His two sons, Don and Eric, who were supposedly running the Trump Organization while their father was president, are regularly at the meetings. There are several investigations into Trump and his organization now, including the ones out of New York and Georgia. Haberman said about the planning, “this is not the only focus of attention, but it is a focus of attention.” Trump’s ace in the hole if he ever does get charged is to call the whole thing a “witch hunt,” which he has done countless times before. There’s still a long way to go before Trump faces any consequences for his alleged wrongdoing over the years, but at the very least, it’s taking up a great deal of his attention and is keeping the former president occupied with things that are perhaps less harmful to the country.
To Protest Racism, Event Forcing Only White People to Pay
An LGBTQ event called “Taking B(l)ack Pride” is scheduled for next weekend in Seattle, Washington. Unfortunately, the gathering is making headlines for all of the wrong reasons. The group organizing the event has announced that white attendees will have to pay an entry fee of somewhere between $10 and $50, whereas black and brown attendees will not be charged. White folks will pay what they can on that sliding scale as a form of reparations and to allow black and brown attendees to not have to pay. The group Capitol Hill Pride, upset about the policy, wrote to the city of Seattle that, “we consider this reverse discrimination in its worst form and we feel we are being attacked for not supporting due to disparaging and hostile e-mails.” Seattle’s Human Rights Commission is looking into whether such a policy will be allowed to be enacted. Clearly, this is not the right way to go about fighting racism in the United States. We’ll stay tuned to see if this policy is allowed to go forward or if the city strikes it down under civil rights law.
From over the weekend:
Netanyahu is Finally Out! Now What?
Members of the audience wrote in last week about the Israeli parliament’s ousting of Benjamin Netanyahu as prime minister and the new PM Naftali Bennett. People want to know whether this will turn over a new leaf in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and the truth is we just don’t know yet. There are people claiming that there is no difference between the two leaders and there might be an element of truth to that as Bennett is still a right-winger. But this was a crucial first step. A prerequisite to achieving peace in the region has always been getting Netanyahu out of power and now that has been realized. It’s going to remain a tough task to reach any agreement with Hamas and the Palestinian authority in the West Bank. A leadership change in Gaza would most likely have to be the next prerequisite. But what often gets overlooked is that the most important issues, according to Israelis, are the domestic ones like jobs and healthcare. It’s those types of issues which, generally speaking, are likely to get the immediate attention of this new Israeli government.
