Trump Melts Down at Humiliating Rally, Calls Biden "Son of a B!tc&"
Donald Trump held a rally in Perry, Georgia over the weekend and for once he actually had new material to share with the audience. While the former president did recycle some old bits, like prompting a “lock her up” chant for Hillary Clinton, he also notably added new stuff about “taking our country back” with the 2022 midterm races. He said, “with your help we’re going to take back the House and send Nancy Pelosi back to San Francisco where she can work very hard to bring back a city which she has helped to very much destroy just like they’re destroying our nation.” Trump couldn’t help himself from questioning fraud in previous presidential races, at one point suggesting Barack Obama wasn’t really reelected in 2012, saying “he won. Well I don’t know if he won — maybe he won. Who the hell knows if he won?” Then, Trump lied about the Arizona Republican-controlled “audit” of the 2020 race concluding that he won. The ex-POTUS suggested to the crowd that the “audit” went in his favor, when in reality it simply confirmed Joe Biden’s win and even added a little to Biden’s margin of victory. Later on, Trump called the current president a “son of a bitch,” something right-wing media would lose their minds over if it was a former Democratic president saying about a Republican president. The bottom line is Trump understands it’s time to focus on the midterm races and progressives need to look ahead to them as well. The future of these rallies and the impact of Trumpism in American politics will largely be dependent on these races and they may be a chance for progressives to finally send Trump into political irrelevance.
Fox News Has Banned Rudy Giuliani
Former New York City Mayor and ex-Trump lawyer Rudy Giuliani went on Steve Bannon’s Real America’s Voice program last week to talk about supposed voter fraud in the 2020 election. Despite being nearly a year past the presidential race and Arizona’s GOP-led “audit” confirming Joe Biden’s win, these two are still holding out hope that state elections will be decertified and that the Biden electors will get thrown out, propelling Donald Trump to victory. Steve Bannon said, “as sure as the turning of the earth, they’re going to be decertified.” Rudy did his part to play along and then whined about supposedly being blacklisted from Fox News and claimed his son Andrew, who is running for governor of New York, also isn’t allowed on the network. Rudy said, “they do a pretty good separation between Hunter Biden and Joe Biden — gosh, you know, it’s outrageous.” Fox is likely not allowing Rudy on their programs because they worry about him making unfounded and debunked voter fraud accusations that could implicate the network. Giuliani and Fox are already being sued by Dominion Voting Systems to the tune of billions of dollars and the network has likely decided they have a better chance of the suit getting dropped if they deplatform folks like Rudy, Sidney Powell, and Mike Lindell. This is yet another sad chapter in a long fall from grace for Rudy Giuliani, and we’ll see where he goes from here.
From over the weekend:
Does Beto Actually Have a Shot in Texas?
Beto O’Rourke is reportedly weighing a run for governor of Texas. The former US representative previously challenged Ted Cruz for a US Senate seat and then ran for president in the 2020 Democratic primaries, coming up short in both races. Beto chose not to challenge Texas Senator John Cornyn last year, but now he appears to have his eyes set on the governor’s mansion. Governor Greg Abbott at this stage seems vulnerable, with his approval numbers slipping down to the low 40s in part because of his poor response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Abbott is also being challenged to his right by folks like Texas Republican Party Chair Allen West, so if he survives the primary he’d next have to appeal to centrists in order to win another term. This is the perfect race for Beto to get involved in. O’Rourke only narrowly lost to Ted Cruz in 2018 and at least for now, Abbott is vulnerable. Much can change between now and November of 2022 and it’s also unclear how Texans will respond to Beto’s strict gun control stance that he took in the 2020 presidential race. But if O’Rourke wants to win statewide in Texas, this is arguably going to be his best chance to do so.

Is the Influence of Trumpism Evaporating?
Over the past few weeks, we’ve seen some indicators pointing to the theory that the influence of Donald Trump on American politics is fading away. One of these data points is that on September 14th, we had the California gubernatorial recall election where the right wing came up well short of victory. Despite California being a solidly blue state, Republicans thought they had a real chance at winning and at some points during the race the polling data suggested that was true. But ultimately Governor Gavin Newsom was not recalled, winning a decisive 62% of the vote. Talk show host Larry Elder, a Trumpian candidate, lost decisively despite leading the pack of picks to replace Newsom if the governor was recalled. Another sign pointing to the waning influence of Trumpism is the poorly attended “Justice for J6”rally in Washington DC. While some feared the rally could garner mass attention that could put the Capitol building at risk once again, attendance was only in the dozens and the Trump supporters were greatly outnumbered by police and media presence. These two events don’t mean we’re out of the woods yet, and Trumpism could certainly rebound before the next elections. But progressives and Democrats are certainly in a more comfortable position with these two data points than they would be if Larry Elder became the next governor of California and if the “Justice for J6” rally had attendance in the thousands.
