Donald Trump is Getting Impeached AGAIN
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is moving forward on impeaching Donald Trump in the wake of the coup attempt at the Capitol last week. Resignation and the 25th Amendment were the preferred courses of action for Democrats but both are extremely unlikely to happen at this time. Trump may only have nine days left in office, but he’s clearly a danger to the republic and he could do a lot more harm in the time he has left. The House is expected to file one article of impeachment against Trump and it is for “incitement of insurrection.” The lower chamber is expected to vote to impeach since it is controlled by Democrats and some Republicans are on board with the idea as well. This week, Trump will almost certainly become the first president in US history to be impeached twice.
After Trump gets impeached by the House, there will be a trial in the Senate. This stage will be much trickier, as Mitch McConnell will be able to delay the start of the trial until January 19th or 20th. The Senate will most likely be voting on conviction after Trump has already left office. Several Senate Republicans are considering turning on Trump, including Ben Sasse, Lisa Murkowski, and Pat Toomey. Seventeen out of fifty Republicans will need to vote on conviction, assuming all fifty Democrats are in agreement. If the Senate does convict Trump, Congress can have a follow-up vote on whether Trump will be banned from holding federal office in the future. This would completely thwart Trump’s attempts at a comeback in 2024 and that may interest some Republicans.
Lindsey Graham BEGS FOR MERCY for Trump
Republican Senator Lindsey Graham has been one of the biggest Trump suck-ups over the past four years. Though he was critical of Trump in the 2016 primaries, the South Carolina Senator quickly pivoted to Trump’s side once it became clear who was in charge of the Republican Party. Graham even went so far as to back Trump’s bogus voter fraud claims after he lost reelection. Only after the insurrection at the Capitol last week did Graham tell fellow lawmakers that “enough is enough” and that he would be voting to certify Joe Biden’s election win.
Last week, Graham was accosted by Trump supporters at the Washington DC airport. His years of bootlicking were not good enough, as he became just the next Trump loyalist to be thrown under the bus once no longer needed. Now Graham is desperate to avoid having to vote on impeachment. He went on Fox News and argued that President-elect Biden and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi should not move to impeach Trump as it will just tear the country apart even more. Graham’s concern isn’t actually about the country, but rather himself and his party. He knows that voting on Trump’s impeachment and conviction is really bad for him and Republicans either way.
From over the weekend:
Fox Host Hopes Trump "Forgives" Pence for Not Overthrowing Election
The Fox & Friends hosts had a discussion about Donald Trump and Mike Pence’s relationship after the insurrection at the US Capitol last week. Trump turned on Pence during the attack, tweeting “Mike Pence didn't have the courage to do what should have been done to protect our Country and our Constitution.” Fox anchor Steve Doocy argued that the good feelings between Trump and Pence are done for good, while Ainsley Earhardt held out hope. She said, “I hope the president will be able to forgive [Pence].” Trump incited a coup attempt that put the vice president’s life in danger, and to this Fox host, it’s Pence who needs to apologize over it. Even at this late juncture, right-wing media personalities will defend Trump when he is so clearly in the wrong.
