Justice Clarence Thomas' Wife Implicated in Trump Coup
Ginni Thomas, the wife of Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas, was heavily involved in the attempt to overturn the 2020 election results and the lead up to the January 6th Capitol riots. Ginni was emailing with Trump attorney John Eastman and Arizona lawmakers who wanted to send an alternate slate of electors to Washington DC. The January 6th Committee has obtained these records and are now considering whether to dedicate more time in the hearings to discussing Ginni’s alleged role in inspiring the attacks. What makes her involvement particularly egregious is that she is the wife of a Supreme Court Justice and the SCOTUS is supposed to be an apolitical entity. It’s conceivable that Ginni didn’t share her intentions with her husband, but that’s rather hard to believe. In a sane world, there would be an investigation into whether or not Clarence was at all involved with his wife’s efforts, and impeachment hearings if he was, but it doesn’t seem like that that has any chance of actually happening.
OH NO: Republican Gave Rioters Recon Tour of Capitol?
Republican Congressman Barry Loudermilk is now being accused of leading a reconnaissance tour at the Capitol to future January 6th rioters. Surveillance footage shows Loudermilk taking a group through the Capitol complex on January 5, 2021 with a man in the tour seen photographing security points and stairwells. The congressman has denied a request from the January 6th committee to explain the tour, but he was willing to give an interview about it to Fox News’s Laura Ingraham. The explanation he gave was that the tourists were simply taking pictures of children’s artwork. Something about the timeline and Loudermilk’s explanation leaves much to be answered. Perhaps he really is innocent and wasn’t trying to prepare the rioters, but at this point given everything we’ve learned about January 6th, nothing can be taken for granted.
From yesterday’s show:
Trump Claims He "Wrote" Outrageous 12-Page Statement on Riot Hearings
This week, a twelve-page letter supposedly written by Donald Trump was released to the media in response to the January 6th hearings. It’s not even for a second believable that Trump wrote the letter himself, since the former president doesn’t read or write. However, it’s possible he sat down with someone and told them what to write. One of the criticisms Trump levied is that if the committee really wanted to get to the truth, it would be bipartisan with equal representation. This was actually the initial intention, but then Republicans fearing it would look bad for them, decided to opt out from the idea. Furthermore, a bunch of the Republicans who were subpoenaed by the committee didn’t cooperate including Steve Bannon and Peter Navarro. In the letter, Trump rehashed debunked theories about how he actually won, including by mentioning how his lead grew on election night only to dwindle in the following days. The “red mirage” was anticipated before Election Day, as Trump told his supporters not to vote by mail and the in-person votes were counted earlier than the mail-in votes. The ex-POTUS is desperate to take back the narrative about the 2020 election and the January 6th Capitol riots, and we can’t allow him to do it.
From yesterday’s show:
Republicans Suddenly "Support" Gun Bill Which is Mostly Trash
Republicans are now saying they’re open to the idea of supporting bipartisan legislation on mental health funding and some tiny gun control measures. Ten Senate Republicans and all of the Democrats are currently supportive of a proposal that would have a red flag provision, support for state crisis intervention orders, funding for school safety resources, an enhanced review process for buyers under the age of 21, and penalties for straw purchasing. Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell said in response to the agreement, “[we have] a coming together behind a framework which hopefully can be turned into legislative language and passed.” This is a mealy-mouthed endorsement from McConnell, which will give him and most other Republicans the room to back out of the deal if they ultimately want to. But luckily only ten GOP members of the Senate will need to sign onto the legislation in order to make it law.
