Republicans HUMILIATED in Pathetic California Recall Defeat
Gavin Newsom has survived the Republican effort to recall him as governor of California by a comfortable margin. With seventy percent of the vote in so far, the “no” campaign to keep Newsom has triumphed with 64% of the vote, besting the “yes” campaign to remove him which only got 36% of the vote. Among people who wished to recall the governor, right-wing radio host Larry Elder got the top spot with about 47% of the vote with YouTuber Kevin Paffrath following up at around 10%. This is a crushing defeat for the Trumpian agenda and Republicans who actually thought they had a shot at winning in the blue state of California. Some right wingers are turning this around by saying the state is just too far gone for them to win at this point. For example, Ben Shapiro tweeted, “the failure of the CA recall is a reminder to Republicans still in the state: the decline is now inexorable. Get out while the getting is good, and move to a purple or red state. Your life will radically improve.” Finally, conservatives in California are getting the message that they can’t win there, but not before wasting $276 million in taxpayer dollars to host this recall charade.
General Feared Trump Would Launch Nukes After Losing to Biden
According to Bob Woodward and Robert Costa, Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Mark Milley took action to limit Donald Trump from launching nuclear weapons after the then-president lost the 2020 race to Joe Biden. The reporting is coming to light in their upcoming book Peril and the authors confirmed that Milley “was certain that Trump had gone into a serious mental decline in the aftermath of the election, with Trump now all but manic, screaming at officials and constructing his own alternate reality about endless election conspiracies.” The Joint Chiefs Chairman reportedly held a secret meeting on January 8th, just two days after the Capitol Insurrection to review the process for what to do if military action was ordered by Trump. Milley told people at the meeting not to take orders from anyone unless Milley himself was involved and then went around the room to get verbal confirmation from everyone asking if they understood. It is not normal for the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff to act in such a way, but neither was the administration of Donald Trump, especially during his radical lame duck period. If Trump wanted to launch an attack, he still could have done so, but it would have required him first firing Milley and everyone else who would have stepped in his way. For those who think an American president wouldn’t do such a thing, they clearly weren’t paying attention to Trump’s message to the rioters he called “patriots” on January 6th.
From yesterday’s show:
Larry Elder Claims Fraud BEFORE Election
Larry Elder ultimately lost his bid to become the next governor of California and conceded to Gavin Newsom once media outlets called the race. But before Election Day, Elder was offering a preemptive concession and claimed that there was a significant possibility that he would come up short because of voter fraud. Elder’s campaign launched a website to allow his supporters to report instances of irregularities at the polls and to sign a petition to investigate the results of an election that hadn’t yet happened. The site had a message that read, “We implore you . . . to join us in this fight as you are able, primarily by signing our petition demanding a special session of the California legislature to investigate and ameliorate the twisted results of this 2021 Recall Election of Governor Gavin Newsom.” Even though California is a deeply blue state that is two-to-one Democratic, some right wingers remain convinced that the only way Elder could have lost was through voter fraud. Donald Trump set the narrative to blame losses on fraud with the 2020 election and now other Republicans are doing the same thing no matter how pathetic and far-fetched their claims may sound. To his credit, Elder was able to accept defeat after the results came in, something Trump could never bring himself to do.
From yesterday’s show:
Dems Pushing Higher Wealthy & Corporate Taxes
Democrats are pushing for higher taxes with their upcoming reconciliation bill and though the changes look small, they could make a world of difference. Part of the proposal is to increase the top income tax bracket from 37% to 39.6% and to lower the threshold for where that top bracket kicks in from $628,300 to $450,000 per couple. There is a call for an additional three percent on incomes over $5 million per year. Lastly, the corporate tax rate would go up from 21% to 26.5%. The estimate is that this would raise $2.9 trillion in revenue of the $3.5 trillion that the entire reconciliation bill would cost. Folks on the right are pretending as though these changes are radical and will hurt the middle class. In reality, it’s only those at the very top who would be affected and those people are so well-off that they wouldn’t even feel the changes. Many of these rates would be going back to where they were under Obama and Clinton when economic performance was quite strong. The specifics of this proposal will continue to be worked out but so far Democrats have it well thought out and the only barrier in their way will be getting moderate senators like Joe Manchin on board.
